Training advice needed
I've been training kenny for show lol, I went to ringcraft last night, and his walk is perfect, but the stand OMG. No way. As soon as you touch him, his tail wags and he just wants to play . I was told, im the problem ,for "loving him too much. That i should be firmer. I am firm, but he just loves playing. They said he's perfect in looks and the walk, but it all goes pear shape with the stand. Showing not a big thing for me, its just a new hobby 4 me and ken, so stopping would be ok. Im gona keep trying the stand for a few weeks and if he doesnt improve, we'll 4get the shows, so peeps, as a last attempt, any tips. I've tryed useing treats, but he sits, i've tryed o toy, he just waits bum up, tail wagging. I've tryed putting him in too the stand, and he rolls over, I try my best to be firm when this happens, but he makes me laugh

Re: Training advice needed
Practice, practice, practice! I started ring training all the dogs I showed at about 8 weeks old, so it was 2nd nature by the time we got into a ring!
You need to practice when there are distractions, though. No point only doing it at home. Try 4 or 5 times when you're in the park, or even a couple of times in the street when you're walking him. Start by standing beside him & holding a treat/squeeky toy out in front of him. If he goes to sit say "No, stand" quietly but firmly & put your foot underneath his bell, just in front of his back legs so he can't sit.

Re: Training advice needed
You definitely would be able to use a clicker. I'd search on youtube/google for videos, articles etc. There's a youtube user, think her name is kikopup with a lot of clicker training videos. You would have to shape the behaviour gradually probably. I'm not 100% certain what stand you need, but you could teach him a verbal command to stand and then gradually only click and treat when his tail isn't wagging etc.
The easiest is to write down what you want to achieve in steps and then gradually build up to everything.
e.g. Stand
Stand still
Stand still, no tail wagging
Stand still, hind feet spread back
Stand still, no tail wagging, hind feet spread back etc etc.
Just remember that first do it with no distractions, then build on duration, then distractions and then both duration and distractions. Sounds like it will take forever but they pick it up super fast!

Re: Training advice needed
I have no experience with showing dogs and probably never will. At 9 months he is very young and thus easily distracted and playful. Kenny will mature in time, are you expecting too much from him?

Re: Training advice needed
The stand is proving difficult for me in training as well at the moment so thanks Caryll for your advice.
