Staffy Tail Advice
Hi,
Was wondering if anyone on here can tell me a little about my dogs tail
I was thinking of showing it but wondered how much of a fault her tail is if it is, or not. I read a book that says the tail doesn't hold much points? However want a proper answer. When she stands her tail is normal pump handle type but when walking slightly curled. The rest of her is really good, I think. I put some photos here for you to look at. Please only people who are experienced in shows please reply.
Appreciate it

Re: Staffy Tail Advice
Any chance you could get a video of her trotting?
In the pic of her moving the tail doesn't look quite right, but it isn't too bad. Any dog's tail will raise slightly when they move faster than a walk, it just depends how far it is raised & how much the shape changes.
If she's good in every other respect then a slight tail fault won't stop her winning. What you have to understand, though, is that if the judge is faced with two dogs (yours & one other) which are of equal merit then the one with a good tail will win.

Re: Staffy Tail Advice
Another question Caroll. If choosing a stud what type of dog would you choose to correct this fault?

Re: Staffy Tail Advice
Whenever you choose a stud you must always look for a dog that excells in breed type, has all the necessary health checks in place and has a good stable temperament. Once you've found three or four that you think are good specimens of the breed, look to see which ones will not only compliment your bitch's good points but will also correct her faults.
So, as long as the dogs you have in mind compliment your girl, you can then look at their tails and see which one conforms best to the standard.
No stud dog should be chosen purely on the strength of correcting one fault - the overall complimentary value is what you must look for.

P.S. Whatever stud you are interested in, ask if you can see pics of his progeny. That will give you an idea of the 'type' of pup he throws.

Re: Staffy Tail Advice
Thanks. But you wouldn't say this fault is strong enough not to breed from her?

Re: Staffy Tail Advice
PS. I do have a Ch in line for stud. I know his ancestors back to the 1930's. Seen many pics. Chosen him out of a handful. His tail is standard.

Re: Staffy Tail Advice
There are many things to ask before you start to even think about breeding from her. The first thing I would do is speak to her breeder & ask them if, in their experience, she is good enough to breed from. not just the tail set, but everything else as well.
It's always worthwhile having a chat with a judge as to her virtues/faults. Then if both are favourable, look at a dog that compliments her virtues & corrects her faults.

Hi Caroll,
Here is a video of her tail carriage (Just click on the link). To be honest if she is being baited with chicken to walk a bit better than this then her tail can be carried higher (she wants the chicken, lol). I will post up of that later. But let me know what you think here?

Re: Staffy Tail Advice
I don't think you'll have too much of a problem with the tail. It doesn't look that bad!
Nice girl, what's her pedigree?
