There was a TV series called Bionic Vet which was all about a vetinery practice in the UK that does heaps of this type of work. They did hip replacements and replacement limbs\paws for dogs and I particularly remember an episode where they replaced both hind legs on a cat that had these chopped off by a combine harvester.

Very cute little guy!!

Though I fail to understand why he would have been euthed if not for the prosthetic paw. I have personally known 2 dogs missing limbs. One was missing the front left leg, the other was missing a rear leg. Both were just like four legged dogs! They could run and play and have a blast! I'm "friends" with a dog on FB who is missing 2 legs! His front right and his rear left leg. He is living fine without prosthetic limbs! It's a cute story, but it just seems unnecessary for a dog.
