Tyson is looking porky
Tyson is looking more than a little rotund to me. I am not stressing too much as I am thinking he may still be growing/changing as he is 18 months old. He is solid and has good muscle definition and gets loads of excercise. We walk at a fast pace twice a day for at least and hour each time and he has a good run and play in the afternoons with the dogs at the park. Tyson only has two speeds...full kilter and dead stop. He also does agility every weekend.
He gets 3 cups of kibble (Hills) - one cup in the morning usually in his Kong stoopped with about two teaspoons of peanut butter and the rest in the evening mixed with either 1 sardine (small) in olive oil or some shredded cooked chicken (about 3 tablespoons. At bedtime he gets 4 Beeno biscuits. Is he eating too much and should I be concerned at this stage of his development?
PS He weighs 22KG and does not get any scraps at all. Also remove his food after 30 minutes.

Is he really fat? I can't say I have noticed myself, if you want to cut down on feeding then do what suits you and him, I have never gone on guidlines, there just that.
Moo is still growing, I notice she is becoming more toned, filling out tbh, and she's 3, so wouldn't be overly worried. We love him

Re: Tyson is looking porky
He's not fat , he's just quite broad , giving that appearance (I have the same problem with my shape)
Can you see his last 2 ribs (apparently that's a good indicator I've read on here, and he's a great looking lad

Ty and Charlie are the same age, I know Charlie is bigger than Ty but his weight is pretty good, I can see and feel his back ribs and he is at what I would think is ideal weight - he is on 2 meals a day, the odd treat now and then, no scraps. I'd put Ty on 2 meals a day if I were you, they don't need 3 at their age.
Charlie was a little on the porky side until a few weeks ago, he seems to be evening out more now, I think it's a growth and development thing.
Either way, Ty is gorgeous

Re: Tyson is looking porky
What you want to start doing is weighting his food brfore you feed him, its a lot easier to ajusted a dogs diet that way

Re: Tyson is looking porky
It can be if you want to keep an eye on their weight, I don't worry about it. If he starts getting a little porky, I'll give him a little less, if he starts looking skinny, I'll give him a little more.

Re: Tyson is looking porky
As stated above try to cut out one of his meals each day if possible. It sounds like he has plenty of exercise may be just a little to much scoff.

Re: Tyson is looking porky
If you are worried the things in his diet i would cut down/out are the peanut butter and the beenos, perhaps only one a night and use something else in his kong like (this might sound rediculous haha) what if you soak his food overnight with not too much water so it is not too drippy and put that in it so its breaky AND the treat?

Can you post a some current fotos showing a view from above and side, can't really tell much from this picture. Weight is the only objective measure of what' s going on. He may still be bulking up as still a teenager.
It's probably the carbs. Can you feed him some fresh meat once or twice a week, I' m sure he would enjoy some ostrich which is low in fat. I once had a fresh ostrich steak in Oudtshoorn many years ago, must have been super fresh, best I ever had. Happy Easter, he's a lovely looking boy.

Re: Tyson is looking porky
I never thought of Ostritch which is freely available here. I managed to measure him (after a tug-o-war with the tape). I did it in inches: He is 18 inches from middle of his shoulder blades to the floor when standing. He measures 30inches around his middle behind his shoulder blades and 24 inches around just in front of his thighs. His neck measures 18 inches and he is 22 inches from the base of his skull to the start of his tail.

He's certainly a big boy but it doesn't sound as if he's disproportianate. I would just cut out one of his meals, feed him morning and evening and see how he goes.

We just go be look and feel. We usually only give low cal snacks though like dehydrated veggies to keep the calorie count down.

I feed 1x but Ty doesn't look as bad as you think. He is thick, but also really active. I am quite fond of the lads look.

Re: Tyson is looking porky
I just think he's a heavy build like Romeo. I didn't give Romeo any treats for two weeks and I can count his ribs now but he still weighs the same.
No one on this forum seems to believe I can see and feel his ribs even with photographic evidence but yeh >.> I would cut out the biscuits.
You could also have a day a week where he doesn't have kibble but has a raw bone instead, I do that as well.
I think Ty looks great though. Romeo will never be a light sinewy build, just look at his paws and bone density. It's like trying to turn a cob into a racehorse if you get my drift.

Re: Tyson is looking porky
aww Ty is gorgeous Millie tends to get a bit chubby from time to time, she puts on weight really easily. The vet very kindly points it out when I take her I just cut back a little on the amounts I give her, a little bit less dry food, still give her treats but not as many. It takes a little while but it has worked with her. Since getting Bella her weight has crept up again. She joins in with the training so every time Bella gets a treat Millie has to get one too lol

Re: Tyson is looking porky
Thanks for all the advice. I only feed twice a day but I will look for alternative for the kong stuffing and reduce the biscuit treats at bedtime. I am also going to try feeding raw meat a few times a week.
