Early release of pups?
I am going to look at a pup for my Aunt tomorrow.
The owner says that they will be ready to go on April 12th.
But according to the ad which didn't include a whelping date (but stated age in weeks) they will only be 7 weeks old.
Can you please advise me on any problems that may arise (if any) from collecting a pup a week early.
If it is too early then I will just collect her the following week. Its is just that my Aunt is eager to get her home.
The welfare of the pup is more important so hence my question.

Re: Early release of pups?
The reason pups leave at that age is because they're not big enough to live sole on food until then. They will get better socialisation with their siblings and their personalities will be more pronounced.
A week makes a huge difference.

They learn a lot of very important things from their mother and litter mates at that age. They shouldn't go to a new home until they are AT LEAST 8 weeks of age.

Re: Early release of pups?
Still am lookin for myself but she spotted her first. Damn it. The pup is the far side of the country which I visit once a week. So suggested that I'd check her out to save her the journey.
She is a beautiful red bitch. Would have looked well running around my garden.

Re: Early release of pups?
No he hasn't said why it would be that date. They are kc registered so I will be checking the whelping date with the accompanying parental paperwork.
The reason it I am so vague on this is just that I dont have exact info. Just that when the ad went up it said they were 5 weeks old and would be ready on April 12th which was 2 weeks from the date the ad went up.
I just wouldn't like to do any kind of behavioural or even any developmental damge to the pup by taking it early if that was a concern by removing it from the mother and siblings.

It could be that the ad was written a week before it was actually put on?

What does your aunt think?
You are doing a lot of research, is she? (not trying to sound harsh)
What is her opinion?

Re: Early release of pups?
Unless there a good reason (mom aggressive toward pups or no longer producing milk) it's best to wait until at least 8 weeks to bring a pup home.

Re: Early release of pups?
It was my understanding that 8 weeks was the norm.
I will check the pup and parents out tomorrow.
After checking out their paperwork I'll have a better idea of their exact age and organise the pick up for 8 weeks from that date.
With regard to my Aunt doing the research,
I am happy to do it as I need to know these things for sure also. I'm still on the lookout for my pup too.
She only wants whats best for the dog and if it means waiting an extra week then she doesn't mind.
Thanks for the help.
I'll let you guys know how I get on tomorrow.

Re: Early release of pups?
8 weeks is the norm, perfectly okay and usually the earliest a breeder will let the pup go unless there is an issue. I gotten them earler than that (around 6 weeks) and later at about 4 months. I had a much easier time housetraining, socializing, walking with the older dog.
The extra time with siblings and parents makes a difference. Best

Re: Early release of pups?
Checked out my Aunts pup today.
Got really excited. It was like she was for me.
She is a fine example of the breed.
Parents are super friendly and not too boistrous.
Put the deposit down after spending a bit of time with them.
Brought the issue up about there being a possible early release according to the ad only to be told no such thing would be happening. He assured me that he would never let a pup go before 8 weeks unless of course there was a problem with the mother. This was a relief.
looks like I'll be pickin the pup up when she is 8 and a half weeks old.

Thought I had one sorted for myself today.
All the bitches were gone.
Beautiful Black pups.
Just none left for me.

Re: Early release of pups?
Oh no George Bugger! We were forced to take Rascal and her sister Milly (since rehomed with a friend) at age 6 weeks. We tried to convince the "breeder" to keep them an extra 2 weeks but they were going away on holiday and didn't want to take all the pups with therm We've worked hard at socialising Rascal, however we have had lots of problems with her jumping up and nipping at the children, something her mother would have taught her about I'm sure. The people who own the mother bitch are not registered breeders - the mother is their pet (they are friends of ours). I don't agree with what they are doing, but people will do what they will do. They plan on Rascal's mother having another litter, plus getting a litter from one little female they kept. *sigh*
