Hi everyone just getting to know other staffie owners
Hi everyone just getting to know other staffie owners. got jess about 3 months ago from a rescue centre. she is a great little dog with a big heart. she just loves people especially kids. only problem is she just wants to fight other dogs that pass in the street. I have no previous history of her just that shes about 3 year old. anyone got any ideas on how to get her to socialize without getting her and other dogs stressed out

Hiya and welcome, nice one on the forever home, are there any dog groups around you or do you maybe have a friend with a dog to try and get Jess to socialise with??

Re: Hi everyone just getting to know other staffie owners
Hiya and well done u for rescueing, we need more people out there like you who want to try and help all the poor staffs out there without homes!!
You will have to go right back to basics with her re socialising. To start with make sure she is safely restrained eg on a harness and lead. If u see another dog approaching from a distance then put her in the sit position and keep her attention completley focused on you with either treats like chicken or cheese or with a toy (which ever motivates her more). Keep her attention till the dog has pasted, gradually let the dog pass her a bit closer etc and see how she goes. Dont introduce her to another dog head on as this can be quite intimidating, instead walk the dogs together a small distance apart then gratually move them coler to gether with treats toys etc. If u no a relaxed dog then let ur dog follow the relaxed dog and see how she is let her have a sniff if she wants to again with treats etc.
Staffords are notoriously people dogs and not dog dogs and its not at all uncomman for them to not get on with other dogs period. If this is the case with your dog then so be it, it might be due to her background but it may not, i no plently of staffs that have been brilliantly socialised as a pup and still hate other dogs.
Good luck xxx

Re: Hi everyone just getting to know other staffie owners
Hello and welcome.
My staff Biddy was well socialised as a puppy and got on really well with other dogs then one day she just decided she didn't like them anymore and would growl and on occasion try and go for another dog. She hadn't been attacked or been in a bad situation at all just went off em?? She was just a people dog a trait very common for the breed and with the added extra that your staff is rescue you don't know what they have had to go through. I would def try what blaze666 said although no amount of treats or fuss made her change her mind here bless her soul. Good luck and all the best with your staff. x

Re: Hi everyone just getting to know other staffie owners
thanks all for the sound advice, sure I will make progress as time goes on, she is settling down each time I take her out, but every now and again she catches me out (little tinker). having to find someone I can walk with at the moment, just a matter of timing and finding the right person/dog to do it with. but again we will get there. keep up the good work all and enjoy your staffies as much as I am.

Hi, welcome to the forum!
Do you have any training or ringcraft clubs near you? If so, you could try taking her along - at first just to sit & watch so she gets used to so many dogs around her, and then to take part.
Love to see some pics of her in the meantime, though!
