Troy chewing his toe
Hi guys,
Troy appears to be 'chewing' inbetween some toes on his left hind leg. It doesn't look sore as such, but it is pink and bald now where he has been licking and chewing it.
It obviously must be annoying him though. Any suggestions on this before it gets worse as to what I can do?

Re: Troy chewing his toe
Check the paw thoroughly & maybe bathe it in a little warm salty water. Then put some sudocrem on it.
If he's still doing it in 48 hours take him to the vet cause he might have got something stuck in the paw that you can't see.

Our Bulldog did the same thing. I couldn't see anything wrong but she had managed to get something stuck under the skin.

Okay thanks for the advise.
I'll do as suggested and see how we go.

Re: Troy chewing his toe
Looked at his foot but can't see anything stuck in it from what I can tell, just red with some hair loss.
I'm gonna wash in salt water but I have no Sudocrem. Can't I use something else like E45 itch relief? Tea tree oil?

The E45 might help, or even germolene. It's just that sudocrem is mild & soothing. And it tastes horrible!

Re: Troy chewing his toe
Diesel gets sore between her toes now n again, especially after digging, I make a point of checking her feet daily now, she once had a load of grit stuck between them which made it sore, cleaned it and slapped on the sudocrem, by morning she was fine.
Tea tree is a good thing to use too as it's a natural antibacterical / antifungal treatment... If u can tell him to leave it alone once u have applied it, shouldn't take long for the tea tree smell to dissipate.

Re: Troy chewing his toe
Lexi did this exact thing when she was his age. Eventually it grew into a lump but the vet had said just leave it shes just stress licking (had grew up and i couldnt keep her in the house anymore) and will grow out of it. Could be the same for troy, hes had a lot of change lately.

Max did the same (and still does now and then) .... we got some special shampoo that you have to mix in a couple of inche's of warm water in the tub, and let them just stand in it for 5mins (twice a week), then let it dry naturally afterwards, got it from the vets who said it looked like a build up of yeast between the toes ... works well so far
Might be worth a go for you ... as Max will just lick anything I put on his feet off

Re: Troy chewing his toe
Troy doesn't like me standing his foot in water, I did it with salty water before applying cream. He runs off now when he see's my with a tub of water
What shampoo is it?
I have been using Sudocrem and seems to be getting better. Going to apply it, put a sock on his foot with an elastic band so he can't chew it..maybe.

Re: Troy chewing his toe
That has worked for me. I usually use multiple strings because I don't know how to check for blood refill in a dog and don't want to cut off circulation

Re: Troy chewing his toe
Guess I could do that. Whatever I use, they won't be on tight.

Re: Troy chewing his toe
Yeah I was worried about cutting the circulation off but if I only used one she would have it off to quickly. With mulitiples it will take a bit more effort to get the sock or bandage off.

Re: Troy chewing his toe
The rear foot seems to have stopped bugging him now, but he has made some of the hair fall out.
Under his front foot in bothering now between his pads. It looks red. Not sure if it is a cut or irritation or what. I have but Sudocrem on that now and see how we get on. Might be a vet visit this one.
Not sure if the two are related or a coincidenace as I was thinking it could be an allergy or summat but would affect all feet if so?

Re: Troy chewing his toe
Hi Gee, sorry I missed your original post about this. Staffies get a yeast build up in between their toes and this can cause them to lick and nibble constantly. If I catch Charlie at it, I tell him to stop. There's not much else to be done really if its due to a yeast build up. If it looks sore, the advice above is great to help it. Just tell him to stop every time you see him doing it. Hope his paws are better now.

Re: Troy chewing his toe
Hi, thanks for the reply.
Yeah it seems to have got better but now on his front paw underneath it is red and he has a red type of mark on one of his pads.
I will continue to do as I am doing and see if it improves.

Re: Troy chewing his toe
hmmm, this is an interesting thread..
Bode recentyly started chewing her paws to bits, making them very sore..
Bode was given a steroid injection, changed diet to jameswellbeloved, and some fish oil to add to her food.
the feet cleard up excellent at first, but seems they are returning pink slightly again after the steroid has worn off..
what does a yeast build up look like? and what could cause it / reduce it?

Re: Troy chewing his toe
Troy is already on James Wellbeloved and I have just started to introduce fish oil once a day which has helped with his coat and some dryness behind his ears.
I'm just starting to think if the oil could of set of an allergic reaction? Hmm, maybe not because his food is the fish ones..

Re: Troy chewing his toe
Ive just changed to the fish one from using skinners puppy food..(bode is 7 months, vet told me to get her adult food now)
there is a massive improvement..
Vet seemed to think it was some food allergy, and something about protein?

Re: Troy chewing his toe
Yeah Troy has some sort of skin allergy but don't know what to.
When I rescued him, his snout was all red, he had hair loss behind his ears, they were all scabbed up on the inside and he had marks on his face etc.
I put him on James Wellbeloved and obviously good exercise etc and he has made massive improvements, completely different dog.
Don't think the previous owner regular fed him or walked him. Came to me skinny with ear and eye infection too!
Anyway, he has got a lot better but not sure what he is allergic to. He is doing fine for now so won't bother with the skin scrapes as yet. I am doubting it is an allergic thing with his paws as all would probably play up.

I'm not sure what it looks like. I only know because I mentioned to my dad that Charlie was chewing his feet alot, and he said their staffy does it too and their vet told them it's because they get a yeast build up in their feet and it makes them lick and nibble constantly. I'm lucky so far in that Charlie hasn't caused any damage to his feet, but my dad's staff literally sticks his whole leg in his mouth and chews and chews on his feet until they're raw and bleeding. I just tell Charlie whenever I see him start, he stops straight away so I just make sure I keep an eye on it. I know he probably does it at night when I'm not around to tell him not to but as I said, so far no problems.
