Re: Geneology
I would love to know ours but trying to get names and dates going further back than my grandparents was almost impossible so I didn't get very far. My dad's side is a bit complicated with adoption, cousin who is actually a sister, other half sisters. All I really know is that his dad played football for Ipswich Town. On my mums side all I know is that my great-grandfather came to Greenock from the Isle of Skye as a child, didn't speak any English and the teachers wouldn't speak to him in Gaelic so school must have been an absolute nightmare for him.
Sorry, bit of a long post to say no

Re: Geneology
The only thing I was able to find out about my relatives is that my Mums Mum is part of the Bowyer family, as in Bowyers pies etc.
Probably of absolutely no interest to anyone else but I found it fascinating. I wonder if that is where I get my love of baking from???

Re: Geneology
It's a bit difficult for me cause my grandparents have been dead for some years & my mum & dad died quite young. My maiden name is Brewer, which is such a common name that it's hard to trace back with any certainty.
I should try & do it properly from birth/death certs etc, but I just haven't had the time.

Re: Geneology
understandable. if my grandma hadn't done it i probably wouldn't have. my mom's side is all i know anything about. my grandpa came from German stock. my grandma's from French stock. grandma traced her line back to 1066 ad.

Re: Geneology
It would be amazing to trace them back that far. I love watching all the tv shows where people have their family history traced.

Re: Geneology
apparently, an ancestor fought in the battle of Hastings, 1066 ad. He was a "knight bannerette" with William of Normandy. personaly, i prefer my couch and a baseball game to fighting.

Re: Geneology
It is a hobby of mine. My fathers mother side can go back to early 1600's in France but my Great Grandfather is a mystery as he was from UK but changed his name when he landed in Durban with a saddle and 10 Shillings (so the story goes) in the late 1800's. Probable on the run.

Re: Geneology
Interesting thta we both have French ancestory. my family's ancestors were roughly treated when we became protestents. eventually found our way to America.

Mine fled Europe for the same reason. The surname was Des Pres. Was one of the original 253 Huegenot familys to end up in the Cape in the 1660's. The family name became Du Preez.
