Crackers gone crackers!
Just saw this on aol news..........This country is going mad!
Health and safety 'goes crackers'08 December 2010P
The British Retail Consortium has called for a ban on the sale of Christmas crackers to people under 16 to be lifted
Cashiers could face up to six months in prison for selling Christmas crackers to people under 16, a retail group has warned.
Under regulations passed in the summer, crackers are classified as low-grade fireworks and can only be sold to those over the age of 16.
Stores face financial penalties and individual shop assistants could be jailed or fined up to £5,000 if they sell crackers to under-age people, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) said.
The policy adopted by many businesses means that shops must ask for ID when selling age-limited items to anyone who looks under 25 - resulting in cashiers challenging people in their mid-20s when they try to buy Christmas crackers. The BRC has said the rules are "particularly daft" and out of sync with European regulations that set the age limit at 12.
Jane Bevis, director of public affairs at the BRC, said: "The Government has promised to ease up on regulations on businesses but this one seems to have slipped through the net. The original EU directive which would have put the age restriction at 12 should never have been gold-plated. Now that has happened, it's vital there is a sensible attitude to enforcement until the Government can reverse this ludicrous restriction.
"Busy shoppers with a lot on their minds will be understandably frustrated if they are asked to provide ID to buy a box of Christmas crackers. It's the health and safety rules which have gone crackers and not retailers themselves. No-one wants children to be able to buy things which are dangerous or bad for their health, but extending rules for fireworks to cover the kind of bang provided by a cracker seems particularly daft."
The issue was raised at Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday.
Tory Michael Ellis (Northampton N) asked: "Are you as concerned as I am about the absurd health and safety legislation that's reached such dizzy heights in this country that the chief executive of Sainsbury's told me last week that Christmas crackers are now categorised as Category 1 fireworks and cannot be sold to anyone under the age of 16 without the danger of a six-month sentence of imprisonment?
"Will you put a firework up their health and safety legislation?"
David Cameron said: "That would give me enormous pleasure and I look forward to doing so."

Re: Crackers gone crackers!
im sorry it might just be me but i think they should be restriced to the over 16 sale becouse i dont know howmany times iv been stabbed in the eye with a plastic mustach or gettin cought up in a little chinnese puzzle.
and many an accident has been coused by a christmas hat falling over a drivers eyes when going to the offey'
i believe these v dangerous items should only be used in a v secoure and controled enviroment and all safety equipment should be used.
after carefull consideration im lobbying for this life tretening and potentally body maiming product to be taken totally off the market or at very least have organised cracker partys were profesional cracker pullers do it at a safe distance to cheers from the crowd.
