Huntsman
A lot of people forget staffies are a terrier breeds. Does your staffy have any very terrier attributes? Do they like digging, chasing or have a strong prey drive? Or are they a lazy bulldog?
If they do go after small furries what's their prey of choice?
Romeo rarely chases anything but he goes completely mental over foxes. He smashed through our fence and has ripped open a pad chasing after them.
He's also become very good lately at flushing out pheasent. He'll go to where they are and 'point.' Then if I nod he'll flush it out. If only I had a gun I could have caught a few by now I've never heard of a staffy pointing and I certainly haven't trained him to do it.
Perhaps I should rent him out to shooting parties?

Suki loves to chase birds and cats. We are trying to break her of the habit but since it's instinct I know we won't be able to

Re: Huntsman
Moo's has a very high prey drive, squirrels are her choice, she's kinda fast and caught 6 last year, nice!

Did she eat them or did you make them into a pie? Romeos too slow to catch anything, much as he wants to kill those pesky foxes.she's kinda fast and caught 6 last year, nice

Re: Huntsman
Hmm, not sure with Troy as I walk him on a lead and there is nothing to chase in the local parks except for kids, so he steals their balls
My neighbour has 4 cats that we run into everyday. Not sure if he wants to play with them or hurt them. We'll never know.
Birds don't seem to bother him but he is very alert so I am sure he would chase animals down if he had the chance.

Suki would definately catch them if we let her off lead. She actually stalks them like a lion and has a very quick start. I just don't want her to ever have the experience

Re: Huntsman
Tyson does go after cats and birds if given half the chance. With my cats its about play but I think he may do serious damage to a strange cat. He has caught several mice in the garden (and taken one or two off the cats) and has a nose for creepy crawlies. The creepy crawlies drive me crazy as he will stalk moths around the lounge knocking over lamps etc. He also brings giant crickets indoors and these are hideous! I think he is terrier for sure.

Ooo thats horrible. My cat leaps about chasing insects. Romeo will have a snap, a couple of times hes caught and eaten a fly.He also brings giant crickets indoors and these are hideous! I think he is terrier for sure.

You should try her with rabbits. Its a good job you're not squeamish. She looks like she'd be fast, from her build. Is she part collie? No she doesn't at them, one shake and breaks there necks and then there usually dropped at my feet

The only thing Ty has chased is a deer and it was so terrifiying i dont let him chase much now maybe the odd bird that i now can fly away, good job he has a good "come!" and "leave it!" command tho coz he's a real chaser and sprinter

Shes brindle, just really light. I guess the correct term is tiger brindle, i've seen staffies with those markings before just not quite as grey. I've seen a few other breeds with very light brindling, I think it comes out more prominantly with mixed breeds although I don't have a clue why.if it was collie where do her markings come from because there not a typical staffs

Roxy chases the birds, squirrels and cats that dare to come into the garden but at the park she doesn't bother with them at all. Although she does have a run up at the ducks but I think its just to scare them rather than catch them!!

Leo loves chasing squirrels, birds and cats. He once caught a pheasant but then let it go. When any of the neighbours cats enters our back garden he will chase them off, but i think he just wants to play with them because as soon as they jump onto the shed roof he sits there looking at them crying. He is great with our 2 pet rabbits, although we would never leave them alone! lol

You can get a dna test done for around £60 i think. pets as home were selling the kits online and it will trace back to grandparents I think.
On topic, Marley has a very strong prey drive and have to be carefull when out walking in the woods as he chases deer for miles and i mean miles. at the mo he isnt fast enough to keep up but im afraid as he gets older because of his crossbreading he will have to stay leaded or I'll just loose him. so many sibes go missing or get hit by cars because they just run off, unfortunatly for me I think that inherited trait will show itself more as he gets older
its a shame as I was hoping the staffy parantage would null it to some extent

Thank you, but DNA testing is a waste of money, heard some very funny crosses come about!
I know how you feel with Deer, I'm very fortunate that there isn't a road near me so I can just let Moo go, she isn't quick enough to catch them but will give it a good go. I'd hate to have to lead her, I do on road but the woods are hers to run

Re: Huntsman
I was thinking of doing marley as i was intrested in his heritage, fortunatly though the guy i got him from emailed me back all i needed to know. blue staff mum and grandparents and his dad has the normal sibe markings but the grandparents were both red shaggy sibes. then out popped my boy with similar coat to your lass. Moo's stance in your avatar def leads me to beleive there is a working dog in her somewhere.
Im in two minds on what to do about off leading as he gets older as he loves it, recal training is out of the question to combat it as he just goes into hunt mode and doesnt hear me at all, his ears flick back and he's off like a dart. the woods I walk him in are away from roads but its quite tireing chasing after him in the hope i can just manage to see a general direction hes gone in. even when riley is with us he flips out and takes off seconds from playing with him. lead boots may be my only option lol i've started to get him into weight pulling so hopefully that will be a compromise for off leading if he thinks he's doing something worth while.

Re: Huntsman
Sibe, I like that idea! I haven't a clue and love everyones suggestions. She certainly has a strong character of something thrown in there!
With Moo, I did a lot of recall and general training in the park, where she couldn't run off, tbh her initial walks seem so boring compared to now!
But it taught her first class recall and now when she runs off in the woods, I'm quite happy to loose her, if I whistle she is back in seconds, so even though I can't see her she is still watching me!
Watching them hunt is awesome, and when she runs and leaps its stunning! Sorry waffling now lol Xx

Re: Huntsman
yup and so are his siblings, he has one brother loki whos the only other brindle but smaller and shorter snout. another bongo who is bigger and red and looks like a dingo, polar who is pure white fluffy as hell with one blue and one brown eye, and he has two sisters that tower above all the boys. they all share the same stance but youd never know they were broters or sisters. Marley seems to be the muscley lean mid range of them all. Moo may or may not have sibe in her but she is defo from working dog heritage with that stance and alert high stature. would explain her strong hunting urges as well. your leaning me towards trying to keep him off lead more with each post. may try recal with a strong loud dog whistle to see if that works better in hunt mode lol

When you say working dogs what do you mean? I am very intrigiued. Loving the idea of sibe being in there!
I couldn't keep Moo on lead, she does her own thing. In a park I can see her and she stays with me, but in the woods I don't mind her disapearing off for a while, she never goes that far, well she might but shes back in seconds if I call

Weenever my uncles take me out hunting with the lurchers we use his staff as the lead dog to send the rabbits out of cover. His oldest dog is amazing. He has an amazing instinct for sending the rabbit out into the open for the lucher to chase. He's not fast enough to catch them himself but is great at what he does.

They're great workers and are eager to please so follow commands very well. Staffs have to be the most tenacious dog alive.
They're strengh and power is evinent when you see them on the hunt.
You're right they are underrated as working dogs and they certainly enjoy hunting.

Yeah, I'm from Nigeria. Was born in Kaduna, lived in Abuja and travelled around Lagos, Joss, Benin and other places.

My boy is deffinitely terrier He chases everything and here is his list:
Cats - hates them
Birds - small, medium, large he chases them all
Squirrels - loves to chase them
Rabbits - chases and goes berserk with frustration when they get away
Also loves chasing the following non animals:
people on bikes
joggers
helicopter yes helicopter. They fly low in a place where I walk him and he chased one the other day until it flew out of sight over a mountain. He is a looney
He also when he gets a scent of something makes a very loud snuffling sound and his nose sticks to the ground as he follows the trail, its weird to watch.
