Paracetamol

Question for you:

Can I give Dempsey Paracetamol?

He's wrenched his back (I think) on the ice & seems to be in a little discomfort. He's walking funny - nothing noticable unless you know him - a little stilted at the back, can't put it any other way. He's holding his tail straight down & doesn't seem to want to wag it, although he's eating well & his stomach is fine. If he's no better tomorrow I'll take him to the vets, but in the meantime I wondered if I could give him, say, 1/2 a Paracetamol to ease the discomfort?

I know I could give him 1/s an aspirin, but I don't have any!

Come on guys, need some help here!

My concern is that I know that Paracetamol is deadly for cats & snakes (yes, I know dogs are different, but I don't want to take a chance).

Caryll hope he's ok , i could send you some of my pain killers i can personally say they wont harm him as they seem to have no effect on me what so ever and if you want to keep him awake for 72 hours i could let you have some of my equally rubbish sleeping tablets.

yes you can give a dog paracetomol but small doses like you would a child so i would take it as you can give them calpol lol

I've just had an answer from the Bully forum I go on to say that, as Bullies can have kidney problems, paracetamol is a huge no-no!

I'll leave it to the vet, I think. Just to be safe.

This is interesting - I've just been given this site re: Dempsey's condition at the mo & it fits him like a glove. I've never heard of this before........

After reading the link I posted (www.woodhavenlabs.com/coldtail.html), I think he has 'cold' or 'dead' tail. In which case it'll clear on its own. Fingers crossed.

A small dose of calpol wont do any harm to a normally healthy dog if only used as a short term thing. long term use of anything containing paracetomol can affect the liver. Asprin also used long term will thin the blood a dogs heart already beats much faster than ours so it puts a bit more of a strain but is not harmful. My freind is a biochemist she studies medication this was her advice to me

I wouldnt have a clue about painkillers for dogs but I really hope he feels better soon.

Childrens asprin is better, I gave it to dixie when she pulled a muscle in her leg.

Phoned the vet yesterday & gave him the symptoms & he agrees it's almost certainly Limber Tail. He prescribes rest & warmth - no painkillers at all! Apparently they won't work! He's only ever seen Limber Tail (aka cold tail & dead tail) on gun dogs and, wait for it, staffords!!! It's to do with the amount of work the tail gets to do apparently! STOP THE WAGGING BOYS & GIRLS!!!!!

Today, Dempsey can wag his tail a little & he's carrying it slightly higher again, so looks like he's on the mend, but yesterday morning I accidentally caught the base of his tail & he yelped really loudly, poor thing!

Paracetamol should not be given to dogs.

It can be under certain circumstances, but must only be given with the say so of a vet.

Love the fact that they have put illegal drugs on the list wonder if anyone read it and thought......

What I didn't know before all this was that paracetamol, even in small doses, is fatal to cats (and snakes).

Yes Caryll... plenty of people leave a saucer of Milk out for feral cats with a few disovled in it

Speaking of medicines for puppys, my friends vet had her dog on Poloramine ( spelling)s for skin allergies.... he was a boxer.
not sure what you guys think of that?.. I know alot of Staffs get skin itches etc.

I think any breed with ultra short coats get skin problems. I've been lucky with both Bandit & dempsey - no real problems. Dempsey gets a rash on his belly if he lies on fresh cut grass, but that's about it. I think the all white bullies have more skin problems than the coloureds.

and blues are as prone as whites to skin probs
memphis is gettin treatment for a patch on his head that bleeds with the cold

Oh, poor Memphis! Does it hurt him, or is it just a nuisance?

no it not bothering him at all, the bald patch was made worse by the vet pulling loads of hair out to do the mange test (which was totally clear)
