Re: you or dog first
I let my dog off the lead when i get in the garden, then he runs to the door and i let him in first. He runs to everybody in the house in excitement whilst i get undressed out of my winter gear ;D

Re: you or dog first
Its usually the back way in for us and the dogs get there first, I think when your established as a pack it doesnt matter who goes first but when they were younger it was always me .

Re: you or dog first
That is one thing I would have to agree.. my last dog walked all over me.. pushed me out of her way and in the end it resulted in Seperation Anxiety that also resulted in the descrustion on my laundry and all its wooded door jams and skirting boards...
I have sense learnt on here she may have just been trying to get out to protect me....
either way I am setting some hard and fast rules when the new puppy comes home.

With my other dog, it was me first, and it will be me first and Charlie second when he's had his jabs and is able to go out. He's my first staffy and I know they have a rep for being stubborn and trying to take pack leader role so I'm laying down the ground rules early.

When you start training your dog (as a pup if that's what you have, or when you get it home if it's a rescue) ALWAYS go first. Once your dog has got used to the fact that you are higher than him, it won't matter too much as long as occasionally you remind them by making them wait.

The alpha always goes first. There is no benifit from letting your dog go first.
Im always first in and out of any doorway

The only rule I have is they have to be polite on the leash when we leave the house. No pulling me out. If I stop, they stop. I personally don't believe in the alpha/dominant/human must leave first thing.

Cairo goes in first.Mainly becuse when i get over the road,i let her off the lead, and she just goes straight to the door.

I agree. I do believe that a dog must have its place in the human 'pack', but I've never had a problem with my dogs going indoors first. Although I teach then to wait I often find it easier to let them in first so I can shut the door behind me, preventing escapes!

Re: you or dog first
I don't see a problem with the dogs going in before me, they go in politley and one at a time, they do not barge past me or push each other out the way.

Mine go berko, as soon as they are in the yard i have to let go of the leash(i kind of like my shoulders in their sockets)so i can lock the gate. Then it's Argie Bargie through the door.
