Considering a SBT
Hello Ladies and Gents.
I am considering getting a SBT. We had one when I was younger he was of Boldmore fame and was a cracking dog. I am now 32 and a single male who lives alone own my own house and serve in the Forces as a SNCO (Dogs are very common in the workplace). I feel I am now in a position where I am financially stable and have enough time to give to a SBT.
I have been disgusted at the amount SBT that are in rescue homes and have been badly treated (
People can be so cruel. A special thanks and a well done to everyone who takes time out of there busy days to re-home these poor animals.
SO...
Should I consider getting a puppy or a rescue dog? I need a dog that will be good round other dogs etc and a big plus would be around other furry animals and children. Plenty of advice would be good. I hope to be able to post some pictures of my new dog in the coming months.
Many Thanks
Ben

hello and welcome from myself the wife and marley
if you are considering a rescue dog your local rescue center may be able to advise you as to which staff they have would be suitable for your situation, puppy's are very time consuming as staffs have a separation anxiety if left too long

Re: Considering a SBT
Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
We got Rocky from a rescue centre just over a year ago and have never regretted doing so. Our only concern is that we can at the moment only have 1 dog and we would love to have more.
If you were to visit a rescue centre as we did, they are quite likely to ask lots of questions and even pay you a home visit just to ensure that your home is suitable ie: secure garden/fencing, and that other members of the household/other animals are OK with having the dog around.
The decision of getting a puppy or slightly older dog is yours alone please read up as much as you can before taking the idea further.
Please feel free to ask as many questions as you can.

Re: Considering a SBT
Hello. Excellent advice. I have a secure garden fenced and live in a 3 bed semi in a quiet location. During the week I live in the mess but other dogs are around and there it is all fenced in and secure. During the day the dog will come to work with me as it is a dog friendly job. Will rescue centers take a poor view on me living alone and being in the forces?
Many thanks for the posts.

Re: Considering a SBT
I would have thought they would be OK about you living alone as many of us do.
It may be an idea to go in and have a word with a local rescue centre give them as much info about your situation as you can. I'm sure they would be able to match a dog to you quite easily.
I don't know what area you are in but Rocky came from WoodGreen Animal Shelter. Please see the link below for a list of rescue centres, just scroll down a little for the UK ones.

Some rescues will find a dog that suits you, rather than you finding a dog, get your details registered and home check done and your perfect partner will appear in no time

http://guildfordstaffords.org/home.htm!!
The dogs are fostered at home so there aren't any kennals involved. Fab choice!!!
Here's a few more to have a look at

Battersea passed my visit, and living alone.
Good luck Xx

Cool thanks.
What do you think there view of me serving in the forces will be? The dog will get so much good attention on camp you would not believe PLUS I have guys who can all dog sit at a moments notice if I had to go away for a period of time? I have also identified a friendly kennel if needs must?!

Re: Considering a SBT
I know it really is horrible and i do warn you walking round a rescue place is not easy as well, i cried when i walked round Battersea for the first time the dogs looked all so sad and desperate. But im pleased more people like yourself are becoming aware of this and are rescuing more its something that needs to be encouraged

I hope so. To many people have wrecked the SBT s good name. Not fair on the dogs. Disgusted by what I have seen from people. You guys on the forum are true SBT dog lovers. There should be some form of intervention from the government in who owns and breeds dogs.
Thanks for all the nice comments and advice.

Welcome! Sounds like you will make a great home for a staff. Don't know much about your rescues there, but I would think if they had all the info, they'd think of your position as ideal.

Re: Considering a SBT
Hello and welcome from me & Heston, who is a 5 month old SBT x EBT rescued from NAWT. Sorry if I ramble on but I think my experience of re-homing a dog is very relevant to your situation, so here is my story...
...My partner & I have a pretty unusual work/home life, as we are live- in estate managers at a private shooting lodge. Some rescue centres can be very strict or appear unfriendly to potential re-homers and we looked at 3 different ones in our local area before going back for a closer look. The 2nd rescue centre had a great environment to observe the dogs and the staff were very knowledgable about every dog. Some of the criteria you have to qualify to re-home a dog was quite specific, such as having an enclosed garden space, and we couldn't meet it. They came for a home visit, taking their time to look round and allowed us to explain what we wanted from a dog. They were very honest and although our situation was quite unusual they were happy to let us re-home.
It has been 5 weeks now and has been very intensive working & training at the same time, but it is already paying off and he follows us outside around the estate or inside the main house depending on where we are working and will behave very well for around an hour at a time; he happily rides in the car; and is good with strangers with guns! The hardest thing has been Seperation Anxiety, which is even harder work than obedience training at times. There is always something work on, but gets a little better everyday...
My advice would be to:
1) Don't be put off if a rescue centre won't even consider you. We experienced this at the 1st re-homing centre which is sad for the animals, but you need to know as much as you can before re-homing and be totally honest.
2) Go for personality over breed. Heston just happened to be SBT x, but judging by everyone's experience here an SBT would be an excellent choice!
3) Crate training is absolutely essential for combining work/home and help with Seperation Anxiety.
Hope this all helps and Good Luck on your Hunt for a compadre'. My partner is away at the moment and Heston is fantastic company, I couldn't imagine being without him Gx

Re: Considering a SBT
Thanks for the advice. I am fortunate to have an enclosed garden at home which is a massive plus. I am going to start speaking to rescue centers at the ned of March to get the ball rolling for when I am ready to offer a home in July/August time. I have had a SBT before and that is why I am keen on the breed.
Thanks for your great comments and advice.

Re: Considering a SBT
you mention you would travel for the right dog?
i was walking woody yesterday up at the estuary and got chatting to one of the dog walkers from the nearby kennels (briarcliffe kennels, thornton cleveleys, lancashire) and she had a 9 month old staffy/labrador cross with her that had been abandoned and was looking for rehoming, such a friendly happy dog (was tempted but his lordship would be most unhappy) she also mentioned they had a staffy that had been there 3 years!!!

Thats right I would travel but I am looking at July time. Thats so sad a dog being there for 3 years. Why do people not want to re-home these special dogs. I can't wait until I'm ready to give one a nice home.
Thanks for the post though
