essential Oils for their coats

What are your thought on essential oils for their coats?

I have a very sensitive nose to smells.. and If Holly is going to become an inside dog.... then she needs to SMELL great. lol
I was thinking of making my own sensitive shampoo as i have heard that Staffys are quiet sensitive...
lavander, tea tree etc...I have used essential oils for many years in the house and on the kids at times...

what do you guys think about a spray bottle with these sorts of oils in it for her grooming time?

there coats are rather short so there not a lot of grooming to be done but mine get a spray of colomine and teatree when they go to the groomers for his nail done on the whole staffys dont smell to bad

I don't use sprays on Dempsey because his skin is very sensitive - even cut grass leaves a rash on his belly.

All I'd say is be careful. A stafford's coat is really short & many things can irritate the skin. If you groom regularly she shouldn't smell too bad unless she rolls in something!

Because of there short coats they really dont smell too bad and a bath every so often should do the trick, as said they can be very sensitive to things so just wary of using prodicts on them, if indoubt ask your vets whether they are an option

so if your going to use oils or smellys be verry carefull about it
i personally wouldnt be puttin anything homemade onto my dog

Yes Mark B there are a great number of toxic essentail oils... infact all bar i think Lavender need to be broken down in carrier oil, even for humans.

i am talking about 2 to 3 drops of oil in 250ml of water ... nothing major or serious.. just a refreshing smell.
I might do a little more research on this.

As I said before, you will have to be careful of allergic reactions. If you're going to try it, try on a tiny patch of skin first & wait 2 or 3 days to see if there's a reaction.

I'd be careful what you use on them, skin problems are a nightmare when they start got one hear with it but the odd bath and hypo-allergenic baby wipes keeps them smelling good.

My sister told me they make dry shampoo?...
anyone use this?

Seen my dad use it on his collie cross but not on his stafford, don't now how good it was but she always looked clean to me.

I have used them in the past, but not with staffords or bullies. I used them on a Border Collie & a Belgian Shepherd, but found them to be very drying on the coat. I didn't bother again.

Ok and with their skin being quiet sensitive drying would irratate their skin too.
I know I am prob being paraniod but I have such a strong sense of smell I wont cope with "doggy" house smell.. I want her to be able to come in and sleep but she will need to keep nice and clean,
Is there a weekly shampoo that you can get that doesnt strip their coats?

Oh and I have an outdoor shower we plumbed when we renovated.. so I have runnign hot water and a shower outside... so I would be able to bath her in comfort no worries..

I certainly wouldn't bath her weekly, no shampoo would be mild enough for that.

You can buy doggie body wipes, though, or at least you can over here, so that might be an answer.

Cool Doggie wipes..I like the idea of that. I will google it adn see where i can buy them.

John Paul ones are good, but a little expensive. I'm sure there will be loads more. If you can find a gentle one, suitable for pups, it would be better.

You'll acclimatise to the doggy smell Mel, 6 months down the road it'll just smell like home! Lol

The only thing Harley gets is shampoo and doggy deodorant from the dog washer, otherwise he smells fine except when he drops one then it's gas mask time.

LOL.. Hydro dog wash?.. is that those people that come to your house and shampoo the pooch? WHat is the diff? or you just like it for convience?
I have running hot and cold water in my back yard so I think we will be fine to bath her . I have some fido's deod for the cat.. he doesnt like that to much when i spray him lol/
