An observation
I was always under the impression that the cocking of the leg and scent marking behavior of males was related to testosterone and that this behavior would be suppressed in a dog that had been neutered. (Especially if he had been done before sexual maturity). I had visions of my boy piddling like a girl forever. Over the last few weeks however, I have been watching Tyson with interest as he first started to * his leg and then moved on to smelling and marking on every tree and every post he past. Although it is no way scientific, I am thinking that the trigger for this behavior may well be instinctual and not at all related to hormones.

Re: An observation
I think it varies. Jack is just over a year old and intact but he'll do a combination of leg lifting and squat peeing.

Re: An observation
Its dominance/territorial females will do it also if their dominance is high enough, got nothing to do with their nuts.

Yes, it's a display of scent marking & letting all the other dogs know he's there. Not much to do with testosterone, I'm afraid!

Re: An observation
Rocky is about 2 years old and has been cocking his leg for about the last 9 months or so. He has been done (by the rescue centre).

Re: An observation
Believe it or not, bitches also scent mark The only reason they don't lift their legs as much as dogs is that anatomically it doesn't work as well!!

Re: An observation
Yep its all about scent marking, thats why males will try to pee as high up as poss (Max almost topples over sometimes ) so their sent will stay, and cover the last male that was there
