Krash the Kooka
just thought this was way too cool not to post.
my cousin and her boyfriend have just become mum and dad to a young Kookaburra!
Her uncle accidentally hit it in his car when it was just a fledgeling leaving the nest, my cousin Jess took him to the vet and they said his wing was too badly broken he would either be pts or she could keep him and care for him.
so away she went and applied for her wildlife license and dove in the deep end to care for him.
they named him Krash and she has had him about a month now, and has found that he is very expensive to care for! he eats mice once a day so each meal is $4 if they buy it from a pet shop, they sometimes catch lizards for him if they can and bugs and things. I suggested catching mice because where they live there are mice every where (east gippsland - country victoria) but theres a risk that the mouse has eaten poison. but they are in it for the long haul!
here he is - I'm going to meet him at the end of the month

Awww, Krash is gorgeous.....
I remember going for family BBQ's when I was in my teens and they would come down and steal bits of sausage from the BBQ.

Re: Krash the Kooka
I don't think so, his wing is badly broken, it is healed so he is not in pain but she said he can't get more than 2 feet off the ground to fly. but he stretches them out and flaps them so he will be a happy hopping bird now who is alive at least!

yeah I suppose they're pretty big... trying to think of something to compare them too now but I can't.
they're very interesting birds and you can often get very close to them in the wild. my grandpa used too feed them meat from his balcony.

Re: Krash the Kooka
What a great story! I also have never seen one. $4 per meal is quite a pricetag!

Re: Krash the Kooka
we had a kookaburra "laughing" here the other day and Winston had never heard one. His head was tilting from side to side listening!

Re: Krash the Kooka
haha oh Winston, I have never known a dog to pay attention to kookaburras.
Krash likes to wake every one up at sunrise with his 'song'

Something like that ^ every single morning, right outside their bedroom window, I am no longer jealous of their new pet!

Re: Krash the Kooka
my mum ( who is 80 ) was over from South Australia last year and we took her out for a picnic at a large dam around here. We had a barbque and while we were sitting at the picnic table eating our sausages a cheeky kookaburra flew down and stole a whole sausage off the plate!! It happened so quickly..we couldn't believe it!
With Winston I think it was the first time he had heard one..and there was a pair of them making quite a racket! We only get them here every now and then, thank goodness, as we have lots of wrens here and I know they eat them!

Re: Krash the Kooka
When I think of a Kookaburra song, I think of the song I sung in elementary school:
Kookaburra blows on a didgeridoo
Huffs and puffs till his face turns blue
Huff kookaburra! Puff Kookaburra!
It's too big for you!

Re: Krash the Kooka
That is kind of strange that g a y and l e s b i a n are censored. What is so offensive about someone's sexual orientation?

Re: Krash the Kooka
I couldn't believe that they are even banning the Biggles books ... due to the fact he may be g a y !! My brothers used to love reading those books, and now golliwogs are banned..the world has gone mad!!
