Well, you didn't know the temperament of the dog, you didn't know if it was friendly with other dogs.

But what you do know is that if it wasn't very friendly, they are very powerful and have a powerful bite. So if something did kick off, it could be bad.

Would you have done the same thing if it was a big staffy?

I wouldn't feel bead about it all. I'm wary off dogs that are off lead as well. It's always better to be safe. We always make sure to introduce dogs on lead after talking with the handler.

I don't think you're a hypocrit at all. You were just concerned about what could happen. I mean, you didn't scream abuse at them to put their dangerous dog on a lead, did you? You didn't pick your dog up & try to hide it under your coat? You just, very sensibly, called your dog away to avoid any confrontation. There's nothing wrong with that, and if that's all that other dog owners did I'd have no problem with them at all!

I am the exact same with any dog I see that is off lead. Tinkerbell is never off lead because her recall is hit and miss (more miss lol), so until we get that sorted I won't let her off.

On our walk this morning we wer just apporaching a park when we saw an elderly man with an off lead labrador cross thing, the dog froze in the middle of the path and stared at Tinkerbell. I had a feeling something was going to happen, becuase of the way he watched her aprroaching, so I went to detour around the dog. Just as we approached the dog, it decided to come and sniff Tinkerbell and without any warning let out a massive grown and went for her side. The elderly man screamed at it and chased it off, but I had no apology off him whatsoever. Tinkerbell wagged her tail the whole time and showed no sign of aggression, she was excited to play, especially when the man approached her to chase the dog away, she got even more excited because she thought she was going to be made a fuss off.

I never trust any off lead dog though, no matter what the breed is. There are unfortunately too many unresponsible owners who don't have full control of their dog and still let it off lead!

I must say I umed and ared about this, I can see it from both sides. The thing is if Moo is off leash she won't bound up to other dogs and I haven't experienced it either with her really. Very small dogs and Surrey wives round here lol.

There was one occasion when a GSD came legging it over from the other side of the park (I never really walk there now) and tbh I was stood stiff, not because I thought Moo would attack but for myself!

Its apprehention (sp) and nothing to be ashamed of. Xx

It wasnt hypocritical it was sensible. If lexi does a runner and usualy runs right for the field at the back i always want to grab her as fast as possible cause there is big alsatians. I know their trained police dogs but i don't know how they will react to my dog and im more scared of them killing her than i am of her attacking them and shes DA! No matter if it was a chihuahua coming running to me i always stay reserved until i know its safe.

I could own a yorkshire terrier or a rottweiler but i will also judge a dog at first because i do not know its temperment. When i am walking my lot, I always put them on leashes even when there is a toy dog wandering around and even more so when there are larger dogs, at the end of the day i will look at a larger breed twice simply because they could do more damage and i would assess the situation, You acted as a responsibly owner should, people who don't consider the possible threats are the idiot owners who cause all the damage.

I myself am totally warey of any dog off lead irrespective of its breed or size.

I know my dogs are socialised but I do not know what other people do with their dogs so cannot be totally certain of my dogs reaction to a highly charged dog that is charging full throtal at them barking.

I always keep my dogs on lead around other dogs and allow them to run on the beach but as always keep my eye out for other 'strange' dogs so I can call mine in to my side also x
