Can anyone help me out?
I am getting a staffy cross ABD in 4 weeks but my partner is being diffcult with me!
Although he has agreed to let me have her he has this attitude it will maul anything in its path including my 4 year old son!
The fact is its my best friend who is giving me the pup and i have met father and mother, in all honesty 2 of the most loveley friendly dogs i have ever met in my life! he has also met them and knows they are child friendly, very tame and have a lovely temprament aswell as being stunning dogs!
Anyone have any suggestions on how i can make him understand that this pup isnt going to maul anything or anyone as its not fair to say things like this when he hasnt even seen our pup yet!
Thanks and much love

You will be a responsible owner, therefore the training you will put in will reflect in the dogs behaviour! It's not the breed at fault, its the bad owners who don't train or socialise from a young age (if they socialise at all!!)
Training an socialisation is the key! Do all the puppy/junior classes you can, if not for the training then being around other pups helps a lot!
Good luck with your pup when you get her !!!

Re: Can anyone help me out?
There's loads of good stories on here about staff's / other bull breeds. For every bad story you hear there are 100 good stories you don't hear about!
Not a staff story but you've read my thread on the Rottweiler's. There is a woman I know that stays next to a school and she has had 5-6 Rottweiler's since I can remember and they are always on lead, but they never pull her or try attack anything. Yet they 2 attacked my dog today. That just goes to show what can happen if you put the training in! When you get the pup he will come round to it! My mum thought all staff's were like the ones you read about in the paper! We got Bailey 9 weeks ago and she loves him, she even clapped a staff in a shop

Re: Can anyone help me out?
As long as there obedient and brought up around children then all should be good! Sounds like a staff x ABD will be a pretty big dog so I'd say jumping up would be a big no no! But I'm sure your friend will help you with all this! There's no better feeling than putting the time and effort in with training, and seeing your hard work in action once they understand what to do! I've loved training Bailey lol!

Re: Can anyone help me out?
Don't know if you have already or not, but have a look through the Training and Behaviour section and that should give you a little idea of things you can start when you bring your pup home and how other people managed them!
There are times when you feel like giving up with something because it's like your dog's not listening, but thats a typical staffy pup haha. Bailey can do the usual sit, paw, lie down, high five, but ask him to roll-over and he thinks its an invitation to bite your hands !!

Re: Can anyone help me out?
So, you say your OH has not yet seen the pup. Has he been around the parents at all. Surely if he has, he would know the temperment of them....and if he has'nt seen the parents maybe you could organise a time for him to view them and spend a little time to see what they are like. Also try to organise for him to go and see the pups.
As mentioned above, if you train them from the start and let them know what is expected of them you are on your way to a great relationship. ALL members of the household need to know how various situations will be handled as to not confuse the pup. Consistency is key
Good luck, and keep us up-to-date

Not a problem Laura Happy to help!
Also as Lisa said 'Consistency is key' is so true, everyone in the family must do the same. If you tell the pup off for something and your OH doesn't and then you tell off again, that will confuse the pup so she won't understand what your trying to get her to do!

Re: Can anyone help me out?
Both breeds are known to be good with children, staffs especially. BUT, children should also be taught how to behave with dogs; that they shouldn't tease or poke & pull the dog around; that they should respect the dog's need for peace & quiet & to be left alone when it goes to its bed; that dogs should be left alone when they are eating (all my dogs have been bomb proof with their food, but I would still teach a child not to interfere with a dog that is eating!).
It's all in the training & supervisation. There are very few nasty staffs, and most of the nasty ones have been badly treated and/or brought up!

Re: Can anyone help me out?
I think you will be fine. I have four children ages 4-12 and they have grown up with dogs. It isn't a breed issue. Hope the OH comes about and falls in love with scarlett (also hope she is nicer than the scarlett from gone with the wind... jk).

am sorry to say that if not every member of the house hold agrees to the breed/type of dog you are getting then you shouldnt get it.

Re: Can anyone help me out?
Like alot of them are saying take him to puppy classes, its a great way to let your dog meet a lot of other dogs and people at the same time..

I'm sure your OH will come around. Just be certain that eveyone in the house follows the same rules with the dog and evertything should be fine
