it had to happen .... staffy discrimination :/
Well it had to happen ....
Took Zac over some playing fields and he had a lovely play with a black lab and then a run around off lead with a lovely cairn terrier. Put him back on his lead and carried on with our walk, and saw a lady with two white terrier type dogs (off lead). She saw Zac and immediately picked one up and gathered the other one that closely it was practically grafted to her side. She then took a wide berth and walked past the evil, snarling, foaming at the mouth, killer staff ... Who was actually wagging his tail and wanting a fuss from her lol .... And barely raised a smile when I gave her a cheery hello!!
As soon as she was past us she put her dog down again ... the cheek of her! I bet my lovely Zac is far more friendlier than her or her dogs! I'm surprised it happened here as staffs are normally loved in this neck of the woods but guess not everyone is going to love the breed.
Rant over lol x x

Re: it had to happen .... staffy discrimination :/
I know what you mean in an indirect way, marley is still a bouncy pup, has been socialised really well with both humans and dogs and only ever wants to play with other dogs we meet. Yet.....when some people ask what he is you can see the expression on there faces change, even though moments before they were fussing him... makes me sad but it's there loss. on other hand I met a really nice couple out with there kids who asked if the kids could stroke marley, i said okay and while they were fussing him the guy said "i can see he has staffy in him but what else" that was a really nice moment. its a ying and yang world sometimes i guess

Same happened to me a couple of weeks ago, two women walking little furballs towards me, stopped first and then dragged them out onto the grass to give me and Sasha plenty of room, they spent the whole time staring at me and making comments to each other.
I was bold, I said "aww they are lovely, but she wont eat a whole one" .

This happened to me once with our last staffy murphy. Some guy with a poodle gave us a really wide berth and as I walked past him I said ina concerned voice " oh dear is your dog a snarler' you should have seen the look on his face, he was gobsmacked! I laughed all the way home and murphy wagged his tail all the way home too......job done!

Great lines. I'm going to work them in. I usually just tell my boys that not everyone is safe to let love on them, but that I'll protect them from crazy people. I make sure to say it loud enough for the other people to hear. good ideas on other things to say hehehe.

Re: it had to happen .... staffy discrimination :/
Yes we have had this too, but the ncie comments we receive do make up for the nasty one's....even if they are sometimes far and few between.
We had an incident up the school not long after getting Tinkerbell. She wears a halti headcollar because she pulls on her lead. When I was standing waiting to get my daughter, a woman and her mother walked up muttering about allowing a dog like that up the school. Shocking really, why didn't I see the danger...my 2 year old son was stood next to her stroking her whilst we waited. A few days later at the school again, the woman came up with her JRT under her arm. Tink wanted to go say hello and because she was restricted by the lead she instead sat and barked. We have since seen the woman walking her dog in the evening and she has picked the JRT up and crossed the road. Sad really as Tink didn't do anything wrong.
But you will always get judgements for owning a staff unfortunately just cherish the nice comments because you know in your heart how great staffies are!

Lol, we went on a walk beside the canal and a couple of ducks came swimming and quacking towards us on the bank and marley nearly ripped my arm out its socket trying to get away. yet he seems quite happy to sit and let a horse trot by him with just an inquisitive head tilt and floppy ear...the rider even laughed at him

Re: it had to happen .... staffy discrimination :/
Sometimes I wonder if it's their own dogs' behaviour they are worried about. How many yappy dogs have we met that just snarl, growl and snap? Don't think I've met a small dog yet that didn't try to attack Rascal! She goes to sniff them, and just about gets bitten for her trouble! I reckon they're worried what our dogs will do to their badly behaved biters!

I agree with you both ... Haven't had anymore blatant issues since then lol but a greyhound owner did drag his dog past without so much as a sniff ha ha but I think that's more because he was worried that his dog wasn't sociable and not because of Zac x x

Love all the suggestions about what to say when meeting the staffy haters! LOL
I was walking on a dog beach with stellar once (still on lead at the time) and an older lady with 2 maltese on leads yanked them up in the air by the leads leaving them dangling mid air!!! I looked around quickly thinking we were about to be attacked by some rabid dog, only to find out that it was US she was worried about. (stellar was all of 5 months at the time) I was angry at the time, but in hindsight, it was pretty funny watching those poor dogs wiggling around on the end of the lead!! LOL

Re: it had to happen .... staffy discrimination :/
I rarely get any negative comments most are really good and to be honest there is hardly a day that I take Millie to the park that I don't get good comments. I find people either know that she is a staff or haven't a clue and when they ask are surprised. One woman said to me "She is lovely - I thought they were ugly dogs"!!
I find most elderly people love her and one couple that I assume are in there 70s always stop with me and of course Millie lies on her back for them to stroke her belly. They even say to her "see you tomorrow".
I will remember what to say now if I do meet someone like you have.

Re: it had to happen .... staffy discrimination :/
I guess there are ignorant people all over the place, Im on my way to be a staffy owner this summer and previously a american pittbull owner. The fuss that I got from people! I hope I don't get it with my new staffy. I decided to do at least 2 years intense training with my pup and because of the breed being in canada we can't have these breeds off lead! so im taking him to agility to burn out. I also do dog fostering and right now I own a frenchbulldog, holy crap! she has been bitten so many times from those little toy dogs! poor girl. Im down to my last foster and we he gets adopted then I will be looking into getting a staffy. what gets me is how are other dog owners so dumb.
Took Zac over some playing fields and he had a lovely play with a black lab and then a run around off lead with a lovely cairn terrier.

You will get more positive attitudes than this sort of stupidity ,the people who do this all seem very similar ,oddly creepy and very gulible they believe all they read (mail sun etc) before we ever had staffys or staffy crosses my dear mother was the same (a daily mail reader)now she thinks they are a fantastic dog

Re: it had to happen .... staffy discrimination :/
In 7 months of ownership I never had an issue at all, untill a few weeks ago, in fact everyone I had met had always been really posative about the breed.
Was walking across the fields as I normally would, throwing the ball about when in the not too far distance I see an old woman with what I figure must have been her daughter with a springer spaniel. Now my dog LOVES springers because theyre as loopy as she is, and instantly knows one when she sees one.
So this other dog is off lead as is mine, normaly I would call mine back and put her on the lead untill I have spoken to the owner, but they were both walking up to each other, and mine had actualy lay down and waited for the other dog to come over, so I figured all is well, the other dog meets mine, they sniff for a few seconds, and then mine bolts off as she does wanting the other dog to chase, which it does, theyre having a great time.
Instantly the old woman sort of half runs towards us all screaming her head off to get my nasty dog away from her dog, even though her dog was chasing mine in the first place.
Now I'm usualy not phased by anything, but her massive over reation to absolutely nothing threw me totaly, and where I should have had a go back i didnt untill we had walked past, just called my dog to follow which she did no problem, and while the woman was screaming go away I just said "come on girl, come away from the nasty snarling woman"
Saw her about a week later in the street with her dog bounding around on its extendable lead jumping all over people.
