minimum wage
if the minimum wage is well above £5 per hour now so why can the job centre put jobs on for companies that are advertising £2.60 and £3.00 per hour. surely this isnt right the wage and the fact its on the governments own job site. thats not worth getting out of bed for by the time you paid the bus/petrol. cos lets face it everything is expensive these days. you would be working your first 2 hours to pay the bus fare so would be no better off if it was only part time hours

Re: minimum wage
What a joke! Someone working 8 hours on £3 an hour would only earn £24! Completely ridiculous!

Re: minimum wage
Agree,it's disgusting!
The job centre here tried to send my son to a job 32 miles from home,16 hours over 5 days,it would have cost him more in bus money than he could earn, then they tried to send him for a job on a when you want me basis,no guaranteed hours.
The job centre are about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Re: minimum wage
Its very poor but I think it depends on the job and if it has training with it ,many young people taking on a apprentiship are very poorly paid but reap the rewards when they qualify I suppose the sacrifice in the early days will be worth it .
Many employers will also want someone with experience and if that job could lead to that then surely its worth a go if it gets you into work again.
I would rather take a low paid job or do voluntary work than just be disheartened keep searching and gettting knocked back, and there are top ups from the government arnt there that you could get also.

Re: minimum wage
It's pretty grim, but they can take on under 18's for £3-something an hour, and under 16 seems to be some kind of free for all - a while ago I knew a boy who worked in a hairdressers sweeping up hair for £2 an hour - luckily for him the old ladies loved him and gave him tips.
The company I work for is pretty fair in that it pays people aged 18-20 the same as over 21s, even though they don't have to.

Re: minimum wage
Why's she going without money for 5 months, Steve? Is that some of new torture designed by the government?

Re: minimum wage
becasue she been on the rock and roll for 6 months she dont want another job so she just waiting till she can claim her pension.
Re: minimum wage
Rediculous. After all those years of paying her NI contributions you wouldn't think they'd quibble about a couple of months, would you?

Re: minimum wage
i know its stupid 30 plus years she worked as an librarian and her librarian pension is something like just over £30 a week i think
Re: minimum wage
I think the adult minimum wage only kicks in at 21+ then its lower and lower below that. What kind of jobs were they advertising at £3.00? Was it maybe a kids job like paper round or something?
