Walk today!
This bloody big dog today (Greyhound/Lab cross or summut like that) comes running upto Max (who was on a lead) .. owner about 100yrds away , wouldnt approach face to face and kept trying to come from behind, so I stopped as Max was tareing my arm off ... anyway, after a bit of sizing up, I could see where this was going and sure enough the other dog started lunging at him and starting to get vocal etc, by which time this woman had eventually speeded up a bit and as she approached shouted "mine just wants to play !!!" .... .... to which I replied "well it was your dog stood over the top of mine doing all the growling love"
Then, about 10mins later the same thing happened again !!! this time with a smaller dog, but was much more snappy/aggressive, and the owner said exactly the same thing !!
My last Staff was EXTREMELY dog aggressive, and that was caused by just one un-provoked incident when he was about 10mths old on a park .. and it was literally like a switch had been thrown in him .. so I'm always afraid of Max doing the same ... cus anyone who has had to live with a dog aggressive Staff will know what its like

Re: Walk today!
I understand why you would be so angry... these moron dog owners make it hard for those of us doing the right thing. It happens over here too don't worry.

Re: Walk today!
Yea its a real sh!tter, and like I said, I'm well aware of what our breed is like if he takes a liking to aggressive behavour, cus try as you might, some just do .... but when someone is 100yrds away from a dog that is trying to bully your dog on the lead, its hard to know what to do isnt it ... do I let some lead out and let them sort it out for themselve's risking spoiling my dog forever, or do I pull him away when I can see the other dog gettin brave cus he's on a lead and he see's me pulling him away as Max backing off makeing him even more brave ????

All you can do is walk away as these people are never wrong.

Re: Walk today!
I guess thats all ya can do
He's very freindly with dogs at the mo, but very impressionable with it, I think he would act accordingly if provoked to be honest !! when the big dog was stood over him growling, I'm sure I heard that faint murmur coming from deep in Max's throat !! (heard plenty of that at the Staffy champ show today )

Re: Walk today!
I think I'd try standing in front of your dog, and sort of standing over the other one in a dominant sort of way... if you know what i mean. I know a lot of you on here dont like cesar milan but I think his idea of "claiming ownership" works well in many situations, so you pretty much tell the other dog with your body language "back off, he's mine, and you don't have permission to harrass him!"
just a thought!

Re: Walk today!
I can see ya train of thought Meg, but easier said than done I'm afraid ... cus obviously once the other dog is close Max is pulling towards it naturally, and if it did kick off I dont fancy copping a bite not having any control over the loose dog

Re: Walk today!
OMG !!! ... the damn thing did it again this afternoon when my wife was out with Max ... but this time it just piled into him roughing him up , when she said "can you put your dog on a lead he's snapping and biteing at mine" , the owner just said "come on (whatever its name was)" and off they went without sayin a word
It sounds like it knows Max wont retaliate (at the mo !!!), so is free to rough him up when ever it see's him ... wait till I see them again !!

Re: Walk today!
How frustrating,some people eh?
I own a very DA bitch and these sort of folks do my head in.
We have had run ins with other owners who point blank either won't recall or the dogs don't have any!
She hates other dogs invading her space and she has bitten 3 dogs,a Dobe,a J R and A GSD,got the reply of mines friendly with the Dobe and JR as they approach snarling and growling and the GSD was loose in the street with no owner.

Re: Walk today!
yeah I know what you mean it would be difficult!
these people seem so stupid... it is common courtesy to put your dog on a lead if another person is walking a dog nearby. I would never let Russell run up to a dog that was on a lead, because sometimes they are being kept on a lead for a reason!
perhaps you should make a complaint or something to the dog warden? I dont know how it works over there

For now I've said we should avoid that area for a while (tho it pains me to say it cus Max is doing nowt wrong, nor are we, and its literally 5mins walk away so ideal for him ), but we really cant risk him becoming a scrapper ... its a nightmare to cope with as I'm sure some of you are aware
Good idea tho , does anyone know owt about getting in touch with dog wardens ? and what they can/cant do ??
My guess would be they will only intervean if a particular dog is harrassing all dogs and deamed a problem possibly ???

Re: Walk today!
Your Local council should have contacts for the dog warden,
If you put your details into this search box it should provide you with the info you need.

Re: Walk today!
Those owners drive me insane! People should never let their dog go up to someone elses without first speaking to the owner and asking if its ok. If your dog doesn't come back when you call or dashes across the field when it sees another dog then keep it on a bloody lead! Or get a long line theres no excuse. I know exactly where your coming from as my youngest staff is selectively DA, she was socialised and taken everywhere and it only took one nasty dog biting her on the leg at 8months. Now I can't trust her with other dogs and when they approach I have to call her back and put her on the lead. Muppet owners ruin it for the rest of us...
