Grr I had an arguement with a dog owner whilst I walked Moo on heat too, what do they think, you just keep them indoors all the time??!!?!? She was on a lead and it was her dog that hadn't been castrated that was the problem. Everyone has a responcibility whether its a boy or girl!

I always encourage nuetering but its your choice, and no you aren't silly for walking her, as I said earlier its just as much there responcibility too!

Huh! They all hump pillows whether there's a bitch in heat or not!! Well, Dempsey does, anyway! Big Grin

It's a huge decision whether to breed from a bitch or not. There's the cost, vets bills etc, whelping box, choosing the right stud, health testing for both bitch & dog. You also have to find good homes for possibly 8 or 9 pups. Financially it's rarely worth it.

I bred 3 litters (2 border collies & 1 belgian shepherd) and it was so much hassle! I doubt I'd do it again.

I personally wouldn't breed unless it was with two health tested & kennel club registered dogs, and it was for the betterment of the breed. There are so many unregistered dogs & staffy crosses out there. I certainly wouldn't breed just to produce a playmate for my dog, or just to see if my bitch liked being a mum.

If I were in your place Sean, I'd get Kuma spayed and then find a really good breeder if you want a new pup. As Caryll said, there is soooo much to thinking about when breeding. Maybe you could find a pup with the same lines as Kuma? Your call mate, that's just what i'd do in your shoes

Sorry, Gem, that wasn't aimed at you - I just feel that litters shouldn't be bred just because it seems a nice thing to try. Most bitches go through life without having pups & it really doesn't bother them in the least.

I would have liked to use Dempsey at stud, but he really isn't good enough breed-wise.

Bandit was a different matter. We used him twice, but both times no pups resulted so we retired him gracefully.

I do understand in a way why people get frustrated because it leads there dogs to running off to where ever the bitch lives as they smell the scent i dont think any body has a right to tell anybody what to do though. i remember when my brother got his staffy they only had him a week and were walking him when i bitch went past in season he went mental chased her and they couldnt find jake or the other dog jake was found 9 hours later he had walked 12 mile they were lucky they got him back they managed to find the bitch not long after and then the women moaned because she was going to have to pay for her dog to have an abortion if the dog had been caught which she had but to me she was the one in the wrong for having her bitch off the lead in season. I personally dont mind bitches being walked in season as i dont think any dog should be locked up if there kept on a lead i think its fine

I agree. It's a matter of responsible dog ownership on behalf of the dog & bitch owners. With all the dogs I've had, I've never had one run off after a bitch, neither have I had a bitch run off for a dog. You just have to be sensible & aware of the possible problems.

Bitches need exercise whether they're in season or not. I think as long as the bitch is kept on the lead, and any dog owners around are warned that the bitch is in season so they can control their dog, it should be fine. Noone has the right to tell a dog owner that they shouldnt be walking a bitch in season. Imagine how she'd feel, with the misery of being in season and being kept inside too, that's just so unfair.

Last week I was walking Dempsey & we came across a weimeraner bitch in season. She was on the lead & so was Dempsey so there wasn't a problem, but all Dempsey kept doing was walked from side to side, all stiff legged & with his tail almost curled over his back & sort of rumbling deep in his throat! Poor boy!

At least he was well behaved and not trying to jump on her. Hmmm, ebt x weimeraner, wonder what that would look like?! Smile

Very strange I should think!

Dempsey behaved himself because we were both sensible & kept a bit of a distance between us! That's what I mean about it being down to responsible dog ownership.

When's her next season due? Can it wait till after the next one? I know we've been through this a dozen times, but it's better to wait till a bitch has matured physically & mentally before spaying. So tiny breeds can be spayed around 9-12 months, but larger, slower-maturing breeds shouldn't be done till they're around 18 months or more.

She finished her last one about a month ago.. well 15 October was the last time a saw any blood from her but her bits are still slightly swollen like a little bulge lol . A do think a might try breeding once but its realy upto me and if things work ok its on my head my responsibility ano things can and will go wrong and its not about money its about the health of any puppies . and ano some people will say about unwanted puppies but a would have my fingers crossed on them all going to nice homes not to anyone who just wants a staffy to say to there mates look at me... but hey could still swing the other way and have her sprayd will find out around feb when the baby is here if kuma has turnd in to a mature female Tongues

Don't forget to give Kuma loads of attention when the baby comes. As long as she doesn't feel left out she'll bond really quickly with the baby.

Whether you breed her or not is up to you. Same as whether you spay her or not. All I'd say is do your homework first in either case, and let her mature before you do either!
