Star hello from me, Sue and my lovely dog Sarge - a cancer sniffer

Post by susuandmo Tue Sep 27 2011, 20:51

I was originally from Staffordshire but retired to Florida 7 years ago. One of the first things we did was to get a dog from the humane society. They are not allowed to rehome Pitbulls/Staffies so we went through the charade of pretending that yes he was a Botston Terrier - of course he was. The vet went along with it and all his records have him listed as a Boston. LOL. Anyway we have been crazy about him from the moment they handed him to us dressed in a little grey Redsox sweater because he had just had a bath. He is a mix but I spend hours looking at vids of other full Staffies and see so much of them in him. He is incredible - loving, gentle and smart. When my husband was told he had prostate cancer the penny dropped and we realized why Sarge had spent the past couple of months sitting on Bill and sniffing constantly at his lower abdomen. He would breath in deeply and look at Bill, and we realize now tried to tell him something was wrong. The day Bill came home after his surgery Sarge went straight to him and spent a long time sniffing. Satisfied he lay down and has never repeated the same behaviour again. He is so gentle with kids and loves to drag them on the skateboard and play football. He is a bit of a porker right now because he cannot tolerate the heat here and will not go out in the summer. Its cooling a bit now and soon we will be able to get back to our walk at the beach where he loves to swim. I have some vids of him on youtube. Search for susuandmo or go to

Hi & welcome.

Love the video, what fantastic pics. He looks a great boy, although I think Boston Terrier is stretching things a bit! Laughing

It's amazing how some dogs can sniff things out like that - really clever boy!

Thanks to so many of you for writing and making me feel so welcome. There is one story I would like to share with you all. Although I love it here and dont want to move back to England I DO miss my grandkids a lot. There would be times when I would feel so deprived and the need to hold them would become almost a physical pain. We were planning a visit and my regular sitter had moved so we were looking online etc for the right person to board him in their home. A family came to visit to see him and for us all to meet. Guess what they had 4 of the most amazing kids - polite, well behaved and just really sweet. They were originally from NY and had NO family down here at all. They took to Sarge and he was crazy about them and the adults all got along really well. They stayed for supper, and that was the beginning of something beautiful. We have adopted each other and they call me Nana. We have family night once a week and they all stay over. Kids go to bed and we play cards etc. Sarge goes and stays with them one day a week and they wear him out!! No one will replace my grandkids but I feel whole again now I have this young family in my life and that happened because of Sarge. They have a Nan and Granddad too and access to a dog whenever they need it. There is a vid on youtube called Sarge pulls Sayeed on the skateboard and you can see for yourseves. It is on my susuandmo page.
