Good quality dry food .. Hmmmmm Empty Good quality dry food .. Hmmmmm

Post by hollymolly Tue Jul 26 2011, 21:24

Advice needed from my peeps... At the moment Inca is loving the Prize Choice raw mince (beef) ...She likes it warmed up abit after it's thawed properly as she likes the juice's it produces... She also LOVES raw chicken wings for her tea... How many times a week can she have things like chicken wings/turkey necks and stuff like that, because if it was up to her she would have them everynight for her tea but i have been giving her them about 2 or 3 times a week....

My dilemma is that i would like to feed her maybe a good quality dry food in the morning and her raw food of a tea time... Is that ok to do that or not, also my next question is - For some reason i have 3 brands of dry food i like the sound of 'James Wellbeloved' 'Burns' 'Arden Grange' also ingredients wise they sound good for her (she has tried Pets @ homes own Wainwrights dry food as a pup and she stuck with it for 2 days and totally went of it !)..

Am at abit of a lose as to what to feed her as she can be MEGA fussy... Any ideas peeps would be a big help and i know i can rely on you to come up with some good advice ... >Big Grin<

I don't feed raw so not a clue, but from whats been said on here, a raw meal fed and then a dry meal fed is fine. You can just feed raw totally and know need for kibble.

Moo is on James wellbeloved now, but she has recently gone off it, I think she is bored so I use tune or gravy to get her to eat it! B4 that she was on Royal Canin which she loved but its very pricey x

If you plan to feed both dry & raw, then I'd advise you to give the raw in the morning & dry at night. This is because raw takes about 4-5 hours to digest & the dry can take anything up to 17 hours! That means that if you feed dry in the morning, your dog will still be digesting it by the time you give the raw at night, and that could upset the stomach.

You can feed chicken wings/necks etc every day if you want. Just keep an eye on her poo! If it's very pale & hard she's getting too much bone, if it's a bit loose, she isn't getting enough!

P.S. the link Steve's given you might help with the dry food.

As the others said - a raw meal and a kibble meal is fine, combining the two in one can cause trouble (rare, though, most dogs handle that just fine - but why risk it if you have to). When I (felt I) had to feed Bajas kibble for a while due to no freezer space, he got a frozen chicken wing/thigh every day to help clean his teeth. You do loose some of the benefits of raw when you add the kibble, but for convenience reasons it might still be worth it!

I don't know about raw meat, sorry can't help there.

But JWB bruno has had since we first got him and he loves it, he barks untill he gets it, he has lamb and rice, we tried turkey and rice but it didn't suit him, so he went back lamb and rice and been fine ever since. He just has to hear the bag and he goes mad Laughing

I wouldnt say thats strictly true, mixing wet and dry food will not 'double' their energy. Really it shouldn't make much difference, in fact more calories are stored in kibble than in a wet pouched or tinned food. Wet foods are mainly water, usually about 80% so if you are comparing dry ingredients your 100gs of wet food would work out to be about 20gs by the time you have taken out the moisture. I guess feeding your dog MORE will give it MORE energy but combining wet food and kibble is not a simple recipe for energy! The only thing you are doing is making the dog more likely to eat it as you've mixed something smelly in and feeding the dog something combined which digests at different rates...
