Training to Jump Empty Training to Jump

Hello all.

This is my first post, and while i will soon write a more thorough introduction to myself, Vic, and my boy Uzi in the relevant sub-board i thought I would begin here.

My SBT, Uzi (Compact, Black and (not so)deadly) is now 9 months old and doing very well with most of the training we have been providing him.
He sits, he stays, he fetches, he waits for an OK before taking food from us, leaves us alone at the dinner table, he doesnt nip at people or jump up at them, he doesn't pull on his leash etc etc so overall, quite pleased with him, especially since hes our first dog and our exposure to dog training is sourced only from the Internet and the Dog Whisperer(and yes i know some people cannot stand his methods but they work for us).

What I am having trouble with is teaching our boy to jump high to get things, ie, holding the flirt pole high, jumping up to grab at his spring pole etc. He is very very reluctant get his back paws to leave the ground and will usually just end up sitting there panting, which seems as though he is frustrated.

Example of what I hope to achieve

During this time i usually get a bit frustrated, but i try to redirect the situation by commanding him to do something he does well and offering him praise, but despite this I am at a loss of how i can encourage him to jump high.

I have tried with food, and toys with mixed results between the two, a few times he manages to get his back paws a whopping 6 inches off the ground, but for the most part he will barely stand beyond his maximum standing stretch.

I have also tried my hand at getting him to jump over obstacles ala high jump with some success, using a broom and a towel, and he can clear it up to a height of around 60cm without to much trouble, but he becomes tired of the idea and would rather go around, under it or not at all, and in these cases i try to change up the activity to some flirt poll, tug of war, or just something he is good at and reward the exercise and put it away for the day.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

-Vic

I've never trained any of my dogs to jump but I'm sure you will find someone here with the experience. I would be hesitant to encourage him to be jumping at this age. He is still growing and his bone structure and ligaments are not ready for this level of activity. It could actually cause health problems down the line like arthritis and hip displacia. This is true for running long distances on hard surfaces and weight pulling or backpacking. Allowing them to pull on things without leaving the ground is good exercise though. I would wait until he was at a minimum of at least one year but 18 months old to be on the safe side before training him for this.

And again welcome from me and Suki. Can't wait to see some pics.
