buying a staff Empty buying a staff

Post by slick Mon Jun 06 2011, 11:19

hello,
im looking at getting a staffy, not owned this breed, or even had bitches, only had males in the past, are the bitches moody? which are best with kids? i know it depends on the dog but there are alot of members can anyone give me any feedback? im thinking about rescue, and id like a 6month to 1yr, would the dog be loyal? are staffs loyal? i know it is a bonding process with young pups but what about a 6 month old? i am in two minds though and might get a pup if i can find a litter, do they come with many heath problems? what should i be asking for when i go to see or buy a pup? thanks

female are alot more loving than male in my opinion, i never rescue a dog before but i can't see why it wiln't be loyel if you treat it right

staffordshire bull terrier can have 4 different type of health issues, but if you buy from a good breeder the pup should be clear from all 4 of them Smile

I have a four year old staff bitch rescue and she is the most amazingly loving dog. Be warned staffs have a way of gettig into your heart very quickly. I've always had bitches and have never had a problem. The biggest tip with whatever puppy you get take it to dog school. It's so important to socialise them well and train your dogs.

Both my boys are recsues Ty at 6 months and Kaos at 11 weeks, both espeacially Ty are extremley loyal and loving espeacially towards me and the kids there have been a few occasions where Ty has protected/defended me once when another dog tryed to attack me (apparently it didnt like long hair?!wtf) Ty rolled and pinned it and another time a offlead dog ran towards my daughters pushchair, not being aggressive just very excitable and Ty put himslef infront of the chair and wouldnt let the dog anywhere near my kids. I would defo reccomend rescuing if a pet is what you are after, there are so many staffs in rescue and would be able to pick your perfect age, temperment etc x

..and I have to say I have a 12 year old desexed male Jethro ( got him at 8 weeks ) and he is the most sookiest lovable boy ever, he loves cuddles and kisses..and is very very affectionate.. Smile
I think when it comes to getting a dog one will just come along and steal your heart..whether a male or female...

A rescue will give you many years of unconditional love. Because they've been ill treated or bounced around from home to home they may take a little while to settle in, but once they do they will give you 100% trust & love.

I have 1 of each they are both very protective and loyal more so my male though but my female is more laid back and chilled, she loves to cuddle up on the sofa but my male would rather jump on and off my lap as and when it suits him
My mum took my female out once she willingly went with her but came home alone slipped her collar and wouldnt stay with her, my male wont even walk out the door with anyone else.

I used to foster for rescues and I mainly asked for staffies/types and like Caryll said they give sooooo much love bcos their grateful and if I wanted a 3rd dog it would be a rescue

Moo was a rescue of about 8 months and when I got her i watched and trained her to become into the amazing girl she is now. You will certainly have no problems bringing them into a new enviroment and the bond and trust is amazing.
If you do want a pup from a younger age you can rescue too Smile there are unwanted litters that need homes too x x x

I have had my boy from 8 weeks (he's now 8 and a half months) and he is incredibly loving and affectionate. If I was to get another one, I'd rescue next time cos there really are so many staffies in shelters needing homes. I personally prefer males to bitches cos I find them more loving and obedient, but thats just my experience, many prefer bitches.

i think we are going to rescue, and probably be looking at a dog/bitch not sure but around 6-8 months old, this way id be helping a dog out, it will be used to other dogs and people and most important kids. the local kids walk the recue dogs on the weekends to help the place out.

can anyone tell me about the blue staffs? i love the brindle colour but the missus doesnt, weve both agreed that we like the blue staffys though, are these irish bred? ive seen a few irish bred staffs but some were white and black? any info on this ?

sounds like a great dog!! is ty the bitch? doesnt she prefer your other half? id guess without ever owning a bitch the bitch would be more loyal to the man than women and vice vercer? my last dog fav'd the misses over me, funny because i put the most time in with him and trained him fed him lol but guess thats just the way it goes sometimes with dogs

Good luck in finding the dog you want but a great dog could evade you if you decide on a certain colour.
Lots of different opinions on irish staffs browse around it was discussed not long ago on a topic Smile

yeah true, if i was to go into the place and see a dog and get along with it the colour wouldnt matter, should have said that! but i do like brindle lol

you do go with your eyes first, its human nature, and your right better more suitable dogs can be missed like that so open mind when i go is the best bet. also i plan to visit a few places and a few times.

Blue staffs aren't irish bred, they're just a dilution of the colour black. Irish staffs are just staffordshire bull terriers who happen to be in Ireland! Either that, or they are pit bulls and are using the name Irish Staff to get around the pit bull ban in the uk!

I don't know how many blues there are in rescue, but you may have to wait quite a while if you're going to stick with wanting a blue. If you do decide to rescue, I'd wait & see what's around, and judge the personality of the dog first - blues are lovely, but so are all the others! Big Grin

thanks for clearing that up. i see that the money grabbing breeders are selling the blues for double the price of a normal coloured staffy? guess there not breeding for healthy pups and just to line there pockets? are there respectable blue staff breeders? i guess it might be hard to find one, especially a rescue
