OK - I take it this will be in your back garden, try to keep the background of the photograph as clean as possible/ no clutter.

Start off with a large depth of field at f22, then keep adjusting it until you reach how much background you want in focus, you will probably end up with f4 for a small depth of field.

Depth of field means how much of the image is in focus. To set this use the A on the dial which is the Aperture.

Try to rest the camera on something like a cushion if you don't have a tripod yet. This will keep the camera steady.
