Hi All Smile

So I am very eager to get my first dog. Have been wanting to get one for the Last 10 years and have finally moved out making it far more possible to happen. Just a few questions I hope you guys can answer Smile,

Would a staff be a good first dog? I have developed quite a soft spot for them as they seem to be quite the "under dog" (awful i know) when it comes to negative press, and I have never heard one horror story about them from people I would consider good owners. Smile.

Also I am living in a rented house and I was wondering if anyone else here has delt with a landlord to get permission for a pet? Our contract doesn't state out right that we can't get pets but I would like to see if anyone has any reccomendations as to how to approach my landlord in a way for him to be more open to the prospect.

Thanks, Andy Smile

Hiya and welcome, of course all of us are gonna say that Staffies are amazing, they are also very strong willed and need firm training, both with stimulation and just tearing around!! With the landlord bit, I'm not allowed animals where I am, I'm in a shared ownership property but I also know that the housing association that owns the bit I don't are never around, so no one will know lol!! But I have heard horror stories of people having to rehome there pets as the landlord has found out. So yes definatly best to get it approved!! Just tell them how amazing Staffies are lol!! Good luck Smile

wave and welcome
Not sure where you live to be able to give the right advice re approaching your landlord, but here in Oz if your lease doesn't say "no pets" then you can only ask the question - will you accept a dog on the property....? If you don't ask you wont ever know. Wink

Hi and welcome, puppies are hard work but I think you would find owning a Staffy very rewarding. Wink
As for the landlord all you can do is ask. Good luck.

Thanks for the warm welcome! Yeah I guess my best bet will be to just go for it and ask him!

I was just hoping someone had some success story of turning an evil dog hating landlord into a dog lover and letting them live happily ever after kind of thing Tongues

Hopefully ill be able to get posting pictures of my dog within the month Smile

Try & phrase the request so that your pup comes across as 'medium sized, friendly and quiet. Fully housetrained (or will be) and totally under control'. Then all you can do is keep your fingers crossed!

Hi And Welcome From Bruno And Me Smile

We're in housing association and not private renting, but we had to get permission to have a dog, we just wrote a letter asking if we got keep a dog in house and in a week, we got our letter saying yes we can keep a dog but have to follow some rules ie clearing up dog mess which any good owner would do anyway, keep barking down to a maximum etc.

Good luck with the landlord Smile

Yeah, its a real shame that sort of stuff doesn't just go without saying. Too many incompetent owners out there who ruin it for others. Sad

hello from me and Poppy,
and welcome to the forum! wave

Firstly, just to let you know Staffys are amazing, and if you do end up getting a Stafford then it's a great decision. Big Grin

Definately speak to your landlord whether he'll let you have a pet at the property, I cant see a reason why not if he hasnt stated it in the agreement! Good luck.

hi from me and woody. as above we would all recommend a staffy, my first staff was my first dog so you may be better rehoming than a pup. my first is introduction to the breed with my first staff was a load easier than training this stubborn little pup. if you are going to get a pup you need to have lots of willpower - stronger than a staff!

sorry cant comment on the landlord issue as i own so if i had the time i would fill my house with them!

I love staffys but would only get one if I had the time, finances and support that they need.
We have a couple of houses that we rent out and we allow pets I cant see the harm at all, we just stipulate that upon leaving the property the house will be in the order it was when moving in and the rental company do the checks to make sure all is well. Hello Smile
