Can't keep him out of the crate Empty Can't keep him out of the crate

Post by sikri002 Thu Feb 27 2014, 12:54

Hey guys. Hope all is well

I wanted to know what I can do....

Lobo is 11 months gets sufficient walks and play in the garden. But when he's in the house and out of his crate he is a real pain! Always running around biting stuff especially papers and cardboard loves to tear it up even tissues. I can put the Halti on him and he just sits there until you take it off but I want him to be free and WALK around the house. But so far it's been to no avail. He spends most of the day in the crate because I have stuff to do and just can't keep him out without him becoming destructive! He leaves the table alone and chairs even the sofas are safe but anything laying around he goes for it. I want to keep him out and enjoy his company but so far it's not working.

Advice?

what are you feeding him?
How many time are you walking him per day?
Does he has a fix walking routine?
Are you being consistent with him in his training are you telling him off one min and letting him get away with it the next?

Hey Steve. I'm feeding him raw. 2times a day. A mile to 2 miles each. Not fixed as in like 5pm it's more within a 30min bracket so between 4:45 and 5:15 for example. Morning 7am and late afternoon at around 5.
Yea I tell him off there and then. What type of training do you mean?

Try to swap the things he isn't allowed to chew for something he can, stag bars are great for chewers, it sounds like he is trying to rid some frustration, does he get enough exercise ? What do you feed him ?

an 11 month old staffy should be getting 55min walks 2/3 time a day, an mile walk takes approximately 17-18 minutes

He sounds just like my boy at that age, bored and seeking attention
from you by being naughty.  Possibly what is happening is that while
you have stuff to do he is feeling ignored so becomes naughty and
destructive and then he gets your instant attention! They don't mind
what sort of attention it is - even being told off is attention!
At 8 - 12 months Lobo hasn't learned to chill and wants to be on the go
all the time, which is natural, but I promise you it will get better in time. Smile
I know keeping him in his crate lets you get on with what you have to do but
its not teaching him how to behave and I bet when you do let him out
he's full of it because he is just storing up energy and mischief while
he is in there.
Taking him out at 7 am and 5pm ish is 10 hours apart, rather a long time
for a youngster to entertain themselves, and he is burning up his energy
the only way he can.  Could you not possibly break
his day up and see how it goes?

He sounds bored and seems to be craving attention (good or bad). You need to find some sort of mental challenge for him, Treat hidden in Kong, find the toy you have hidden around the House etc. Sorry my suggestions are so weak but I am sure others here will have better suggestions.

Hey guys thank you for all your responses. The only reason I haven't been letting him play with anything in doors (kong toy) is because I was told that me letting him do that in the past is why he has become this way (Robert Alleyne told me this). Lizzie I really hope he does calm down. I mean it's lucky I get to work from home but I also got uni so I'm in and out a lot but definitely have the time to play with him. I will try moving the walk times closer together like 7am then 1pm then an evening walk at like 7pm. TonyW thank you for your help also they are a great help. Open to all options here!

When I do take him out he's such a pain and I do the telling off but then he has his staffy rage and runs at like a billion miles an hour around the room. I'm not kidding about the speed it's like he would lift off at any moment. It's not like I take him out and just sit at the table to do work we do play for a bit outside and then we come in and do a little obedience training but then it's back to square one. And then I'm felling like he's never going to calm down. It's been the same for the whole time I've had him

Haven't heard the no toys in the house thing before. I may be doing it wrong. I don't know who Robert Alleyne is.

Barney is very young I know but there are toys everywhere at the moment. I figure I would rather he chews the toys than the rest of the house. He will still rip up a tissue if he finds one but all my Staffords have done that, they just seem to love ripping up tissues.

I would be interested to see what others think about toys around the house.

Ledgers toys mostly sit in his basket but after his longest walks he tends to spread them all over the living room and then is when he is most likely to have a mad 5 mins and destuff his charity shop Teddy's just when you would expect him to curl up!!!!

Definitely spend some time with obedience/trick training that can be very tiring for them and you get the benefits classes can be great to help with socialization and some extra support for you

I would try stag bars and kongs stuffed with frozen sweet potato to distract him at home, I do give Ledger some boxes to rip up once in a while (really helps with the recycling lol) but he also has a good 'leave' and also for lots of things he has to sit and wait and 'watch me' (make eye contact) before I give the 'ok' command and he is released to go eat/play etc

Can't keep him out of the crate Empty Re: Can't keep him out of the crate

Trust me Kay I do know exactly what you are experiencing.  My Harry was
the first dog I ever used a crate for and there were days I could have sat
in the crate myself with the door locked just to get some peace.  Can laugh
at it now but at the time it was difficult.
I guess the no toys in house idea was to try and teach him that play was
for outside, and inside was to be calm and chill and less stimulation indoors. He is too young for that!
Please try mental stimulation instead it works wonders as they tire more
quickly at that age by using there brain.  With Harry I used to play 'find it'
I would hide 3 small pieces of kibble or any dog treat in the Room behind
furniture etc while he was outside the door and then tell him to find it.
He still loves that game now and can count - if I don't put 3 treats out he
gives me a dirty look  Laughing  I also bought him one of those wobbly toys
that you put treats in and he had to knock over to get them out and they
keep standing up again.
I taught him tricks, he does high 5, gives paw, other paw, say bang and
he plays dead, all sorts of things easily done to occupy him.
Oh, and for the first couple of years he thought his name was 'leave it'.
Its all about interaction, teaching and channelling their energy in the right
direction and one day you will suddenly realise things have improved.
When Harry started calming down, I wondered at first whether he was ill  Laughing Laughing
