Coconut Oil

I've got the girls some coconut oil but it's solid. They're more than happy to lick it off a spoon but would it be better to melt it and mix it in with their food?

I let them have it off a spoon or just plonk a lump in their dinner

What are the benefits of coconut oil?

Huge benefits from silky soft fur to wonderful breath. It's also good for the joints, hot spots, excema and much more!

I lump it on too, or sometimes massages it through the fur!

Where do you buy it and in what form would you say is best?

I've read on here that some of your supermarkets sell it. I use virgin coconut oil

It's good for you too    Put some on your hair and wrap in warm towel and leave on for a while.

I plonk on their food, or straight from the spoon, or melt in my hands and rub through their fur

I use it as a moisturiser, smells amazing!! Don't use it on your skin too often though ( once a week is enough) or it can cause spots due to the high levels of fat

Might try this too, I love the smell of coconut. Am I going to start following Rocky around everywhere when he smells of it

Not all coconut oils are of high quality though - some are not intended for ingestion or consumption.

I obviously wasn't looking hard enough in Tesco cos I've been struggling to find it! Must get some as Bane's coat has gone a bit manky and dry again Think he has allergies...

Got some in tesco (hayleys link) today will add tiny bit to his dinner later, he can be a sensitive boy so will add slowly. How much do you give a day? A teaspoon?

Emma it's with other cooking oils, I think it was the only one in a small glass jar.

Coconut oil needs to be virgin, organic non refined to be of the best quality and optimum benefits.

It is also a laxative for those not used to it, so it needs to be built up slowly. I give a tablespoon 3 times a week or daily when they need it, but they have been having it years now, so i'd start with half a teaspoon and go from there

Can I just check, it can be kept in the cupboard, is that right? Hasn't got to go in the fridge? Mines solid in a jar.

Holland and Barrett do a good one, all organic, big jars, I got it in the buy one get one for a penny sale, lasts forever, lovely as a deep conditioning treatment for your hair as well. I even slick a small amount on my eyebrows and eyelashes!

Takes two good washes to come out, put it on dry hair, never wet hair and leave on for about half an hour. Feels icky the first wash but it's like silk after the second!

Any difference between the £6 jar at Tesco and the £2.25 KTC jar does anyone know? Ones virgin and ones not, does it make a difference to its uses? Would like some to moisturise Bane with.

Yeah that's what your after, basically any one that's virgin ( snigger) and solid, it will melt at body temp anyway! Don't get the oil, it's crap and overpriced! That should do you for ages!

Wow this stuff is wierd! Smells delicious though! And Bane looks super shiny. Obviously he likes the taste of it...once I've rubbed it into his sores and scratches how do I stop him licking it all off?

Wow thanks all, I am off to get some for both me and Pixee. Does rubbing it on her coat make it stickly?????? Getting some that does both, rubbing on and eating.............  

no coconut oil isn't sticky it makes them really shiney while it's soaking in, and she will probably try and lick it all off

nope never had a problem here you need to think of CO not like normal oils, as it doesn't have the same consistency of them
