DEMODEX Empty DEMODEX

Post by janmc Sat Dec 07 2013, 13:18

My 17 week old puppy has had a skin problem for 9 weeks after visiting numerous vets I have now had a skin scrape done which came back negative but vet is still treating as demodex. But she had a bath on Monday did not scratch for 2 days but as week has gone on has strated scratching again today being really bad. just wanting to know if anyone else has gone through this situation and if there dog went throught the same. She has hair loss under her tummy front legs and recently over past couple of days on her face and round her eyes

Sometimes a dog can have demodex even if the scrape comes back negative, and vets will still treat for it.

However, it coiuld also be an allergy.

You may already have told us this, but what food does she get?

Have you tried anything to rub into the itchy skin? Coconut oil seems to be really good at not only relieving the itch, but it also has anti bacterial properties & will prevent infection of any sore areas.

Yes ive got virgin coconut oil as recommend by people on this forum I apply this when itching is really bad but it doesn't seem to make any difference I even give her half a teaspoon in her food. Im starting to go mad shes back at vets on Monday for next bath hopefully this will give her some relief again. just don't understand how after a few days itching is back as bad as before the first bath

I remember somebody on this forum had the same problem (can't for the life of me remember who!), and the demodex seemed to get Worse before it started to get better.

Tell the vet your concerns when you go to see him.

I spoke to him on Thursday and told him she was still scratching and he said lets do a skin biopsy and stop the baths but that's why I wanted other peoples input because im led to believe that you should carry on with the treatment for demodex for a while not just one treatment. Don't really want to put my puppy under an anethestic procedure if I don't really need to feel like shes been throught enough now, thought they could do allergy testing throught blood tests

When you start treatment for Demodex the hair loss does get worse before it gets better, hope you get on OK at the vets, let us know x

Daisy was treated with Ivermectin which is very good  Smile

Lola was given Ivermectin but unfortunately it made her sick, so vet decided to use shampoo took her back yesterday and he decided to do skin biopsys as she is scratching all the time, vet told us demodex does not cause them to scratch all the time unless there is infection in the skin which she doesn't have,
Have to wait for results of biopsys now which should be back within a week. keeping my fingers crossed that we get some answers cant keep watching her go through this its torture for her

Thistle is on her last dose of Advocate, a systemic solution applied to her neck once a month, it looks the the demodex is clearing up, no more rash under the armpits, no more hair loss, just a couple of patches around her eye so hopefully the advocate will be enough, if not she has to have the baths. I suspect that central heating might exacerbate the condition, it's cold in my house, but if I do put the gas fire on I have noticed she starts scratching again, but she does sit right on top of it.

Just a thought. Try giving her filtered (or bottled mineral) water instead of tap water. Sounds too simplistic doesn't it, but there are loads of things in tap water that could be causing a reaction.

Hi just a quick update Lola has had her skin biopsy results and shes clear of demodex (thank god) but has an allergy, vet as put her on steroids and antibiotics for a good few weeks and will see her again on 27th dec seems a little more settled tonight as we bathed her in a soothing nedicated shampoo from vet. he wants to do blood tests to see what shes allergic to, and give her something called atopica has anyone ever used this need to find out info before I decide to give her this plus its £80 per month and was wondering if I could get it any cheaper from online
