Post by donsey Mon Nov 18 2013, 22:02

Hi
I have a 19 week old male, im having trouble taking him out for walks, has been wearing a collar since the age of 9 weeks didnt like the lead on the collar so i brought a puppy padded harness but will not walk as soon as i open the front door his tail goes between his legs and he refuses to go out, i have to coax him out with treats put then eats the treat then sits and refuses to walk again sometimes he will walk a few steps then sits and wont move even if i coax with a treat, i live in a little close and so far have managed to walk about 3 houses with the coaxing of treats then he wants to go back home
I have been doing this since he was allowed out after his second injection and dont seem to be getting any further in his walk he seems scared of being outside.

Any advice please.Smile

I have found that the puppies I have had have all been nervous to a greater or lesser extent at venturing into the big wide world.

One problem might be that Bailey is just not used to and is confused by being on a lead and having to walk beside you, so do practice walking him on a lead in your home where he is comfortable. Just minutes at a time, with encouraging joyful noises and/or treats - whichever works best.

When you venture outside with him, do the same with whatever encouragement works best for him, and don't tense up and worry yourself, as this will communicate to him! Let him sniff around and get used to "outside", including traffic noises which can be frightening at first to a young puppy. Even if you go a few steps to begin with and then go back - be calm yourself and don't convey a "thank God we're going back home" vibe to him. Gradually extend your "walks" as he gains curiosity and confidence as to where he is.

Some puppies take longer to get accustomed to "walkies" than others, but don't worry - he'll get there!

Do let us know how you get on

It could be that he is feeling the cold, does he have a coat or jumper to wear outside ?

Rocky is 16 weeks and he is also unsure about going for a walk although once we are out he soon settles in. I found the harness was better as he hated the collar.
As well as walking locally I take him in the car to the park where he seems happier as there are lots of other dogs and people to entertain him. He is also more confident when I take the kids or wife with us - safety in numbers I think. Have you thought of puppy classes? If you dont sort out the walking issue when he is young then it could prove a real problem when he has matured.
Good luck.

I had the exact same problem with Harley, would not walk would just sit, he is 18 weeks and problem started around 2 weeks ago, I used treats as advices by other owners but as silly as it sounds I thought he may b cold so I brought him a coat, and went back to basics telling him he was a good boy in my very enthusiastic voice and fingers crossed so far so good, I think it's stages they go thru, I think he was cold and wanted more praise on walks than I was giving him, hope this helps.
