Hi All

I got my new staffy puppy last night and I am having a nightmare getting him used to his crate. It is more than big enough but he just goes absolutely crazy non stop barking. I thought he would get the message after a while but ohh no. He is fine with the door open and no probs going in and out but as soon as I close the gate and walk away he goes crazy Sad please can anyone advise??

Thanks

Its very early days as you have just got him, where s the crate?
At night you could try having it in your bedroom so he knows you are around, eventually moving it out.

A cover over it is also a good idea and, just pop him in and go out for a few seconds and come back. Don't make too much fuss though just open the door and say good boy quietly. If you keep persevering with this it will improve.
A kong with some tasty treats to keep him occupied will also help. Smile

Congrats on your pup! Have you put any treats or anything comforting in the crate? It's only day 1, so it takes time

We used treat to get darcy used to hers leaving the door open in the. Day an giving her nice things in there, as inez said once he's in there go back and let him know your returning no fuss then leave again. If you lengthen the time when you do this he should learn that you will return. But it's very early days yet. Keep at it he'll get there with calm reasureance and petsistance Smile

Great advice above. I started off by hiding treats in his bedding. That way Bacchus was always keen to go in to see what surprises he could find. Persevere, you'll get there and they are a god-send, they keep both him and your furniture safe if you have to leave him. Try to avoid going to him when he cries as he will catch on that this gets attention. Wait until he stops crying then go to him.

Just take things slowly.Big Grin

Start by putting some tasty or fun things in the crate. Then, close the door for a few seconds, no longer than that.

Gradually increase the time the door is closed & you'll soon have a result!thumbs up
