Mind the overenthusiastic cannonball Staffy

My Staffy - Rupert - loves bombing towards me in the grass in the park when I am sitting down. It is very sweet as I know he does it out of affection but I also know there is a collision waiting to happen - if he got me at the wrong angle he could do damage. Is there anything anyone can recommend? He is like a herd of stampeding buffalo. I can hear him thundering towards me from miles off.

He sounds like he is very excited when he does this, Rocky does this major mad moment whenever he is in the grass at the park, but when we tell him to sit or 'slow' he just stops and takes a break  Definitely lots of treats to aid at the start!

Thank you for your advice. It's just that we will be sitting there having a picnic or just chatting and we see him from a distance hurtling joyously towards us. He definitely slows down but I can imagine him getting me at a funny angle. I am now practicing getting him to sit down before he approaches anyone. Will update. Thank you!
