Anyone who owns a puppy or a particularly boisterous staffy will know how long that new £14.99 tug rope will last. While a new toy is exciting for your dog (and sometimes for you) it is not easy on the bank!

If you want to save a few pennies and still have a hoot with your dog, here are some ideas which might help.

Be sure to always remove any labels, small parts or sharp edges. Only use under supervision.

Old shoes
Icepops/icecubes – you can try flavouring them with stock and adding bits of meat
Old jumpers and jeans tied into knots (be sure to remove the metal buttons or labels)
Coconut (with the bristles removed)
A toilet roll tube, pringles tube or similar tube filled with treats/kibble (remember to take it out of their daily allowance)
Frozen bones and meat (never give cooked bones, even if they are frozen)
Socks – Treats can be put into them to keep interest
Bottles with treats or frozen water
