Very proud of our girl today - was walking around the lake with Tia and my little 2 year old daughter. We were happily minding our own business when a soaking wet St Bernard came out of the lake and started running towards my little girl who got knocked over in the process. Tia did that funny Staffy stance when she puffs out her chest and tries to make herself look bigger and harder than she is and chased the St Bernard back into the water. She only stopped herself at the edge of the lake as she's terrified of water.

Once she'd seen the 'offender' off she came rushing back and sniffed Sophia all over to make sure she was ok, before giving her a little lick on her hand. She's been coming and checking on her all day today to make sure she's still ok.

I know she'd never harm anyone, yet all we got today was sidewards glances and stares.

thats why i love staffs, they are so human focused its unreal and non dog owners my find it hard to beleive. I guess its why we all get so upset at the negative media the breed gets when we know what such perfect companions they can make.

She's always been like it with my daughters. Checking on them all the time, waiting at the top of the stairs until they're both asleep - even when we first met her at the RSPCA she made more of a fuss about the kiddies than us. We were surprised when we were told that she'd had no previous exposure to children and the RSPCA were a little nervous about letting her come to live with us. Staffies are beautiful, especially with kiddies, I wouldn't have any other breed of dog now that I've had Tia.

Out of interest, are male staffies as concerned about the welfare of the babies of the family? Or is it a female trait?

ah, what a star Tia is. A St Bernard is enormous and would knock anyone over, never mind a 2 year old. I hope the little girl has got over her fright, it must have felt like being knocked over by a tank.

I don't honestly know whether a male dog is as protective of young ones as female dogs, as I have had no comparative experience - fortunately.

Yes male staffies are the same with children Smile

I don't have children but we live next door to 2 little girls. 2 and 3, Doug oftern goes for "sleep overs" with them and he loves it Smile Their mum says he follows them everywhere and plays nicely when they have balls for him he also stays at the top of the stairs when they go to bed Smile

I have no worries with him when we do eventually have children Smile

It definitely is the same for males. Leo is the same with my little boy Oliver. He is only 8 months old, but he is crawling and nearly walking. He is always climbing all over Leo poking him in the eye, pulling his ears, his tail (his willy lol). Leo doesn't even bat an eyelid, he just takes it all. Then if Oliver falls over and starts crying Leo is straight there to try and cheer him up.

When we are out and about if another dog gets to close to Oliver, Leo lets them know that they need to be careful. They are honestly best friends, its amazing.

Crazy thing is everyone was asking us what we were gonna do with the dog when we found out we were expecting, obviously i told everyone that i would never get rid of my dog, he's like my first child!

Leo is also really protective of my nieces and my mum, not to the point of being aggressive, but i would honestly not like to know what would happen IF someone did try to cause any of our family harm.
