Concerned... Empty Concerned...

Post by Lynzo Wed Apr 17 2013, 15:03

Hey!

Angus was castrated yesterday and although he is fine and dandy and back to his usual self, he's refusing to drink. Has anyone ever experienced this before? Vet said if he doesn't drink today then he will have to go back in

Maybe hes not happy about standing up or moving around yet ? Have you tried taking his water bowl to him ? and if hes laid down hold underneath him so he can drink ..try adding a little milk into his water , it may tempt him a bit more ..if not i would get a syringe and syringe some fluid into his mouth.. Hope that helps ?

Thanks all! Like I said he's back to his normal self already, bouncing around all over the place like nothing's happened. It's just the drinking that's changed. If i take the bowl to him he runs away. I am using a syringe with him but its not encouraging him to drink alone.

I would bring some water to him in a different bowl or a cup then hold it under his chin, then dip a couple of fingers in the water and dribble some water in his mouth. Hopefully it will encourage him to drink. Lola sometimes gets an upset tummy and the Mister gets her to drink by doing this Big Grin

Do you have any ice cubes? If you do, just let him crunch some up. The anaesthetic can do funny things to dogs & they can behave strangely for a couple of days. Don't forget that he's had a tube down his throat & it might be a bit sore - swallowing water might be a bit difficult for him, but the ice cubes might soothe it & encourage him to drink.

If he really doesn't want to drink then he'll have to go back to the vets for rehydration. Hopefully it won't come to that!

Hope you get it sorted, anesthetic does strange things and even though he is back to himself he is probably still feeling rather woozy Xx

I've never had a male dog neutered before but have had females spayed, it takes them a while of moping around before they can get back into the swing of things.

If you give water in small amounts and often it tends to get them drinking more I find. Ice cubes too, I do that on sunny days as my fella isn't a big drinker.

Not tried the ice cubes yet but will sure give them a try. He's actually just drank half a bowl of water with a little milk mixed it so am getting somewhere now. Thank you all for the advice thumbs up

I was also going to suggest some ice cubes but have now read that he is drinking again, maybe he is thinking that it will hurt if he needs to pee as he knows something is not right in that area ???

Hmm maybe, he's only been for a wee twice since coming home yesterday. I just find it strange as he is eating fine. All I can think is that the anaesthetic has messed with his taste buds and waters not nice anymore??
