Ive had Shéara 9 months and im interested in getting him a playmate. However, do i get a dog or bitch? How old should the new dog be (Shéara's 18 months)? Is is such a good idea after the length of time ive already had Shéara? Leaving a new dog alone with Shéara whilst theres nobody in....advice please fellow staffy lovers x

It's always easier to have male/female rather than two of the same gender, however that said it still can work ok.

I'm working towards getting another dog too. But I'm not at the stage yet as Logan is still very much a big pup.

You have to really think are you ready for twice the commitment. It's also possible Sheara might take time settling with a new dog two so you could have a lot on your hands.

However, if you do want to go for it just make sure the dog is spayed if Sheara isn't neutered and above all else take your time. Smile

It's easier to have two dogs of the opposite sex (in general), and it's good to wait until around two years before adding another dog, so he's probably around the right age. Course, you have to remember it's double the trouble as well as double the love, so it's a lot to think about to make sure you're ready for that. And it's advised not to leave two dogs together without supervision, since they can fight over stupid things sometimes.

My girl was 14mths old when we got Tank at 8wks old. First few weeks were tough. But once they settled it was fine. My girl mothered him a bit the first cpl of weeks. They are best buds and love each other to bits !

If you would be going for a rescue dog ask the centre if you can take your dog along with you to meet any possible new friends. They may well suggest this to you anyway. That way they can help to match you up with a suitable dog.

Good luck in your search
