No progress... Empty No progress...

Post by Mattylee Thu Mar 21 2013, 06:07

Morning all. I know it's only the 4th day of going out for a walk but there has been no progress whatsoever. If anything it's gone down hill since day 1. Maybe I'm possibly being impatient but I'm praising her tempting her with treats but she just doesn't want to move. The thing is, it's a different story when we turn round to come home. She can't wait to get back. Am I being impatient, or should there be more progress? Thanks in advance

In the nicest way, I think you might be being a bit impatient Smile

Make sure you're nice and relaxed, if she won't take a treat then don't keep shoving it in her face. She'll be feeling a bit overwhelmed by everything so just go very slowly and all at her own pace.

Will she walk up to a certain point before refusing to move? If so then try and stop before she stops, reward her with a treat (as she should take it then if it's high value) then turn back. If you keep doing that, it should build her confidence and you should be able to a tiny bit further each time Smile

It willl take a while yet before she has the confidence to want to explore and enjoy himself. At such an early stage they are quite as happy burning off energy by being bad around the house Tongues . However, it's best to stick at it and get her used to it. With Logan I did several very short walks as opposed to a few longer walks because he wouldn't walk either.

This is still the case for me tbh lol. As soon as I say "home time" Logan turns and bolts towards were we are parked Laughing

Really just takes patience. Suki now slows down considerably when she knows we are headed home. You could try taking her to an unfamiliar spot so it will all be new and she won't recognize she is going home

Lots of us have been through this but one day she'll see something interesting and forget her apprehension and it'll all start to change.
With Bacchus it was meeting other dogs which changed his mind, but it took a few weeks.

Good point there!

If you are able to organise a walk with friends/family who have dogs chances are she'll want to be with them and will enjoy the walk more. Also adds to socialisation with is the most important thing of all thumbs up

Vinnie was just like this but only took him round the block at first and he became familiar with this route which then his confidence grew. But as Mat said Vinnie still bolts towards the car when he knows its hometime even now! Big Grin

Maybe take someone with you, or someone with a friendly dog, and she might be so excited that she'll want to walk. I think a well-behaved dog can teach a puppy lots. Loki used to copy his best friend, Buster, when he'd stop playing and lie down while we had a chat, Loki would copy him and do the same. So maybe that'd help? Either way, we've all gone through that phase, so it'll get better Smile

Skye still does this. Unless there is the pram/my kids or another dog to follow she will not move her * off the floor! Stubborn little things! X
