Post by Steve.Sanders Mon Mar 18 2013, 19:24

hi guys.. past few days/week koda had grown a bald patch right on the top of her head about thumb size( see pics ) and after reading a bit online i found it could be something called DEMODEX???? just wanted to know if its a trip to the vet or is there anything i can buy over the counter.. i did read a home remedy of lemon juice but you guys know loads more than me and thought id ask the question.. it doesnt irritate her and she doesnt scratch it and its not raw or sore to touch...

Demodex is quite common in Staffords. At a time I thought Logan had it too. A trip to the vets is the best plan to be sure and you can give medicine to help and a possible change of diet to manage it Smile

Alfie had demodex, i took him to the vets but it was only a mild case so i was advised to let it clear up on its own. Best to get it checked just in case it sounds similar

Can't see the photos. If it is demodex then a trip to the vets is usually in order Xx

Definitely go to the vets so they can do a scrape to see if it is demodex, if it's just the one patch it will probably clear up without treatment esspecially as she is so young but definitely go to see the vet as in some cases it can get very bad.

Let us know how it goes. Sounds like it should be checked but it isn't always Demodex. Staffies can get a variety of skin issues.

Saffy has exactly the same thing. It appeared at about 4 months and she still has it now at 11 months. We took her to the vet when it first appeared and were given malaseb shampoo which made no difference. The vet did offer a skin scrape but it hasn't changed and doesn't bother her at all so we have just left it. I did Google it and found a couple of things saying its common with bull breeds, also to have one just above the tail...didn't explain why though.

Good news! Big Grin

I'd recommend trying apple cider vinegar with his meals. Logan had a bit of bother with dry skin, scratching and hair thinning around his harness. From great advice on the forum I started giving it to him and it made a massive difference. It was from this thread. Have a look through it, I'd really recommend it though because it will hopefully lessen the chance of it ever happening again Smile
