Hives Empty Hives

Post by ziggydog Sat Mar 16 2013, 17:18

does anyone have any experience with hives on their Staffy?
our dog had a serious outbreak that started a few days we came down one morning to find he looked like a cauliflower with all his face swollen, within an hour it went down and then started coming up over his body again so we took him to the vet who gave us some tablets and was suprised how bad they had come up.
they seemed to go down but then his face started to swell again and then he started scratching really badly, he's cut all his nose up over night so we took him back to the vet this morning and he's given us a wash to treat him with and some different tablets. i had to tape some socks over his paws earlier to stop him scratching and making more of a mess of his face.
the only thing that has changed is that we got a new dog a week ago so could it be stress related or could he be allergic to her somehow. the vet had a look at our new dog and didnt think she had mites but he didnt take a skin scrape or anything which suprised me. So our poor ziggy dog is in loads of discomfort and we don't know what to remove or do to stop the allergic reaction.
Any advice greatly received

thanks for the replies. i'll try and take some pics in a min, at the moment it looks so nasty around his nose where he's scratched it i feel so bad for him.

i thought they would give him an antihistamine injection for quick relief but the vet just gave him tablets and them some different ones when we went back this morning. i'll go and see what the meds are called to see if anyone has any knowledge of them.

Sounds like an allergic reaction to something, have you changed washing powder or anything like that ?? Are there any bushes where you take him for a walk that he might have reacted to ?

Ok i came down this morning and his nose had scabbed over nicely so he hadn't been itching but within 10 mins he started scratching at his nose i keep having to get him to sit next to me with my arms round him to stop him but its driving him crazy.
Ive also noticed the lumps on the top of his head and around his ears have gone into more defined spots rather than soft lumps if that makes sense.

the meds the vet gave us were first of all Prednisole and then on the second visit a mite wash and Cefalexin
could it just be mites causing this?

Our other dog is supposed to be full staff but i think she is collie x staffy, her coat is quiete coarse. she seems fine, no hair loss, lumps or anything and she hasnt been scratching.

Do you have your central heating on in the home ?? Maybe if it's too warm this is causing him to scratch more.

Hmm.
So he's has a steroid (which will basically only surpress his immune system response - which isn't always a good thing) and antibiotic then.

Hmm. If he were mine I'd give him a piriton tablet to ease the itching and see if that makes some swelling go down.

Other that that - u could get one of those lampshade collars so hd can't scratch. If no improvement I'd be bk at the vet asking for skin scrapes/hair plucks and blood test to rule out mites/bacterias could be foliculitis etc.

Keep us updated x

I use a weak solution of tea tree oil and water in a spray bottle for Molly if she has any little cuts etc.. and it works a treat. Has the vet ruled out mite's of some sort.. Poor lil thing, I hope he's better now..
