I put Bruno in his crate for some time out after going yampy and he started to wreck the bedding and his bed, throwing them around like a crazy pup lol this never worried me, i just ignored him until i heard a terrible screm, poor bruno got his teeth caught in the metal and now i am worried about putting him in there or do you think he will learn from it? BTW he was not hurt or bleeding from it!

If he's going mad when you crate him for 'time out' then I wouldn't put him in there, you could end up making him hate the crate!

Can you not just shut him out of the room for a minute when he gets too much?

To be honest i think he hated the crate from day one, he was going absolutly crazy and i put treats in there as a way of making it seem not a punishment. he has not been in it since though.

I will put him out the room then instead.

A crate should be seen as a place of safety, rest, peace and solace for ur dog to get away from it all !

Dont use the crate as punishment.

Yes, you see if he doesn't like the crate to start with, then putting him in there for time out is actually a punishment in his eyes.

Try putting him out of the room, and if that doesn't work, go back to introducing him slowly & carefully to the crate again.

I agree with all of the above, he went mad in the crate because you used it as a punishment. Whenever I want to punish Zeus for doing something wrong, I pick him up and put him in another room for a few minutes and bring him back in when hes calmed down, this is very effective.

I have no problems putting Zeus in his cage when I need to put him in, he simply walks in, because he associates it with a happy place. Whenever I put him in there, I give him a treat, which helps alot.

Also, put some distractions in there so he doesn't chew the crate or bedding, for example, I've got a coconut and his stagbar in there for him to chew on.

I know i have made some mistakes but he was really going for me, i could not settle him down. i will put him out the room and allow him to go in the crate at his own accord but what about when i need to go out, he can't be left on his own, i will have to put him in the cratw then....what a nightmare grrrrr

If you're going to crate him when you go out you really need to start using it only as a good thing & never as punishment. If you use it as punishment he'll end up injuring himself - maybe even chewing & swallowing his bedding which could be a problem!

Start out slowly again. Bedding, StagBar/Kong/treats/etc., comfy stuff, and let him go in on his own. Don't shut the door on him at all until he seems OK being in it. Then just do it for a moment and then build it up slowly until he's comfortable with it. Until then if you have to go out...erm...puppy-proof a room? Big Grin

A kong with peanut butter will get him in there ! Make a huge fuss of him, when he's engrossed with his treat close the door to.
Don't make a big deal of it.

Try and train with a command such as 'bed' 'in ur crate' and praise for going in and settling, it may take a good few days for him to settle with the door shut but u need to persevere. Positive praise is good x

If you do it little & often, then yes, he should be ok.

Try & tire him out before he goes in there, though - can you take him out yet?

Logan got his tooth caught in the crate one morning when he was about 8 1/2 weeks old. He pulled so hard before I could get to help him he broke his tooth clean in half. Luckily it was a baby tooth which came out a few weeks later.

I never closed/locked the crate door after then.

Gosh, it's scary when they get there tooth stuck in the crate, we have never moved so fast or heard a dog scream like it before, I hope it never happens again but TBH I think he learnt from it. Never to do i t again, he is that clever.

Anyhow, I am still doing the training of the crate slowly, he's been in there with his Kong earlier and if he bites he is sent out the room instead.
