Lead walking Empty Lead walking

My wee boy, Bacchus, is 13 weeks and just allowed out in the last couple of days, but am finding it a bit hit and miss whether he wants to walk or not on lead. Sometimes sits down and refuses to move other times he will trot along quite happily. What's the best way to deal with the refusal to move? I have been going down to his level to reassure him/picking him up and carrying him for a few yards then trying again / tempting him forward with treats, all with some success and we eventually get to where we are headed. BTW he loves off-lead exercise so am assuming it's the lead he objects to.

Some dogs take a bit of time adjusting to the lead. We have always used food as a motivator. Hold a treat in a clenched fist, let him smell and he should follow quite happily

Personally, I wouldn't bother carrying him even for a bit, it'll probably make him think he'll get his own way like that. Just persuade him with some treats, that's what we did with Loki when he was like that.

Don't pick him up & carry him! He'll get used to the idea & it'll be harder to get him to go along under his own steam!

As jstaff says, a treat in a closed fist will often do the trick, or a favourite squueky toy (one he only gets when you go out) will help.

Do you put him on a long lead at all ?? This may be an idea to get him used to being on a lead but with that extra bit of freedom.

Have you tried the kong air balls (tennis balls with a squeaker in the middle)?great to have in your pocket when out walking, either as a distraction or reward. We have some that we only use for walks, so Percy thinks the squeak in them is so valuable.
