Asking on behalf of a friend. She has two little terrier types and they bark like mad if they hear/see/smell anything and it can go on all night and she and the neighbours are getting fed up but doesnt know what to do?

I wasn't sure what advice to give as i know its not attention barking its alert/protective barking.

We just went through this with Suki. We worked alot on the speak and quiet commands. It took a bit of time but she ended up okay.

I had a similar problem with Biscuit for a while, she's crated in the living room downstairs at night and will do her best, big scary bark at any little sound or movement.. I found that taking her out for her evening exercise later in the evening helped, that way she just sleeps right through!

Putting the behaviour on cue is usually a good way to deal with problem barking.

Have they tried putting a radio on for them at night or would this make the problem worse?

It should be OK just find a talky station like radio 4 and have it on quietly.

Classical music works for Rocky we have a special classic selection for him on the ipod linked up to hi-fi in the bedroom, 10 minutes of that and he is fast asleep. Big Grin

Have to tried putting the clocks forward 12 hours so the dog only barks during the day Big Grin
