Surprised Aggression towards other dogs

Post by My_Chance Fri Jul 13 2012, 17:33

I got a 2 year old staff on Wednesday that was being re-homed by a family, He has been such a lovely dog very calm laid back & loving all was going fine until today when I took him for a trip to the pet store another dog walked past the outside of the shop and the dog we homed instantly went mad at it hair standing up, Barking and snarling obviously this was very frightening to see and now i'm wondering what I can do to try and get him past this behaviour, There is a dog that lives next door that barks etc but my dog hasn't taken any notice of that but seeing a dog today has sparked some sort of aggression into him as I said in the house and with us he is very calm and loving but out today he was very different.

For now just give it some time, everythings new, but be totally aware of his body language and all dogs around you though. Take treats out with you and when you see other dogs distract him. Its really early days though yet so just be one step ahead all the time, they can sense what you feel down the lead, if that makes sense, so make sure you confident when out.

Ella one of the mods has a Rescue called Chance, she is doing really well with him Smile Xx

Thank you Janey, Do you suggest I take him to parks etc so that he gets use to the fact there are dogs around and the tension associated with them hopefully grows old? and if so should I use a muzzle perhaps. It really is a shame because these beautiful dogs have been given such a terrible name by most and yet the problem here is that he most likely hasn't been socialised from young. We are changing his name to Chance as it was Cass but didn't seem to fit him, I'm hoping with time he will be just as lovely out the house as he is in somebody suggested training classes but i'm not sure just yet x

I definatly believe it is something you can work with. I haven't really experienced it so I wouldn't want to advise second hand. Give it some time, your not on your own there though Xx

I would suggest holding off on training classes for the time being as he needs time to get used to his new surroundings and owners first.

Keep taking him to your local park and see if you can get to know some well socialised dogs that he can meet up with and possibly play with. A good walk and play is a good way to get rid of nervousness.

Also try some mental stimulation with games at home by hiding his treats and toys. This willl also tire him out quickly.

If you know someone with a well socialized dog try walking them together on opposite sides with the handlers in the middle. After awhile try walking the dogs side by side. If this goes well keep repeating it and try with different dogs.

He is more than likely still unsettled. Give it time. Good advice given.
