High Value Treats Empty High Value Treats

Post by Jellytot Wed May 30 2012, 16:42

Hi all

Want to start really working on Ralph's recall...

He pays attention well when there are no distractions around - but when there are other people or dogs I can forget it.

What's a really good high value treat that your dogs love? So far frankfurters seem to be the best - any other ideas? Somthing nice and smelly?

Why not try cutting up some tiny pieces of cheese for him, just a little tiny cube that should be smelly enough Big Grin

We use these for Rocky a little bag last ages:

As Kathy says, cheese is good. I find that biltong (dried meat South African speciality) and salami do it for us. Also at agility we use liver paste and cheese in a tube. They go nuts for both.

For Buster I use sausage, cheese and Liver (which I hate cooking, the smell makes me feel ill!) I think cheese and liver are his favourites though, and the smellest I think.

Skye and buster love sausages (dried ones from the pet shop seem to be their fave) although any food they will come back for lol

Dried liver's good as long as you don't mind smelling of it for a few days! Laughing

I was always told to burn the liver to a frazzle to make it extra yummy when I use to take my old BC to classes

Cheese and liver both are great because of the strong smell. We are a bit lucky becuase all we have to do is say "doggy snack" and Suki will come running.

Ew! What a thought!

Is normal cheese ok? I read anything with cows milk is a no go? He's 13 weeks.

Thank you all so much for your comments.

i saute chicken breasts with olive oil and garlic powder and Jelly will do almost anything for it. but when she's distracted, she doesn't even register it until i hold it in front of her nose. she's stubborn i guess! or just a baby lol

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I think normal block cheese is fine as long as your not givng them tons of the stuff.

Sometimes it won't matter on the treat if the distraction is too much of a big step. Start by teaching recal indoors, then in the garden then in a field with distractions in the distance etc so you build up the distractions slowly

Cheese is good but can give a young dog the runs! Also if you cut liver into cubes and dry it off in the oven it makes a good but smelly treat> other dogs will run to you for liver!

woody says he is moving in with you!!

he gets cocktail sausages but it seems to attract all the dogs on the field to my treat bag so must be good!

Maisie's favourite is the Primula tubes of cheese, I couldn't believe how it improved her recall!
