Paddy's op

Hi All ,well the worst kind of injury has happened, Paddy has had surgery for crutiate ligament damage.
He underwent the op (TTA) 4 weeks ago,and all has gone well,apart from trying to keep him quiet and rested,almost impossible as you all know
So yesterday he had to go in for his leg to be x-rayed to make sure everything is ok and is mending the way it should,that went well till I got him home.
He spent all night crying ,whimpering and shivering.I sat with him all night trying to calm him,but he was so restless.He started this snorting and vomiting froth which freaked me out a bit,he had the runs but was refusing to drink or eat,so I put it down to the after affects of the anesthetic.
As soon as the vets opened this morning I took him down,it seems he has had a bad reaction to anesthetic,has been given antibiotic,antacid and pain relief injections and has to go back Monday.The vet seems to think its some form of respitory infection.He seems to have settled down now,is drinking only small amounts,has tried some chicken but threw this back up again.
I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this,I'm at a loss at what to do to get him to drink and feed,I suppose its just a case of trial and error. Poor lad seems to have gone through the mill

sorry to hear he's not better yet. i have read and heard chicken and rice are good for poorly dogs. but then i've never had an ill dog before so can't give too much advice, sorry. hope paddy gets well soon

Thanks Steve,He is and has been fit and well till this operation,it's making me wonder if I've done the right thing,but hopefully long term it's the right decision

As long as he's drinking, even if it's only little & often, then I wouldn't worry too much just yet. Some dogs (like humans) do react badly to anaesthetic & it could pass in the next 24/48 hours.

Just try & tempt him with easily digested food such as scrambled egg or roughly mashed potato - just little bits here & there, don't overload his tum. If there's no change in the next 48 hours then go back & see the vet again.

Mine was in on Monday for an x-ray, drank very, very little for the rest of the day, little for most of Tuesday, then got back to normal fluid consumption about 36 hours after the anaesthetic.
I'm told it's not unusual.
To get him to, at least, take some fluids in during the early post-x-ray stage, I blended a little chicken in water to make a runny "soup".
He didn't go mad for it, but it did keep him hydrated.
I'm glad to hear your lad is on the mend and I'm sure he'll be back to normal by this evening.

Hi All, Thanks for the replies, he's more himself this morning,but still not eating.Tried some scrambled egg,which I had to encourage by hand feeding,but after a couple of finger fulls he started this inward snorting thing then threw it back up in this thick frothy stuff.
I'm at a loss at why he's doing this, 4 weeks ago he would eat normally its only since his operation.

If he is still having problems drinking water try giving him an icecube which he can lick, it will at least get some fluid into him.
