how far to travel? Empty how far to travel?

im in the middle of doing some research on reputable breeders of staffies as we are still thinking of getting another dog/pup,with so many different options to choose from i'm doing as much as i can think and going down every avenue i can think of,i've been on different site's ie champ dogs,k9 and other ones(are these good ones to look at)?i will be looking at rescue centre's to.at the mo there's a lot to weigh up,do we definatly want another one, should it be a pup or a rescue?we live on the isle of wight so to bring a dog/pup home we have at least an hours travel before we get any where,if it was a pup how far could it travel with out totally stressing it out any more than it would be considering it has just its litter mates and mum, looking at the sites i have mentioned there are a few down south but loads middles and up north.

Hi - when we was looking/researching getting a pup we looked at the kennel clubs accreddited breeders - you can choose the area of the country as well as the breed you wish to look at. We was worried about travelling but was so surprise when our little bundle settled down and went a sleep Smile Hope your search goes well

I will always say rescue, far too many out there without homes, young and old.

Travelling with a pup will be fine, as above really they just sleep! Good luck with your search Smile

We got Violet from the seaside, so maybe 2-3 hours drive, but we felt it was worth it. Even though there were lots of pups more locally, we just had a good feeling about Violets litter! We left a blanket with the pups when we went to visit, and wrapped her up in that for the journey home &she slept the entire way, apart from when we drove by the chippy - even as a tiny pup Violet could sniff out a snack!

would it be best to put a crate in the car to keep the dog/pup safe?

We didn't have a crate - I just sat in the back with her on my knee (with a blanket and a puppy training pad, just incase she had to pee! Luckily she didn't.)

I would say a couple of hours travel would be OK any further and they may get stressed.

I would travel miles to get the 'right' dog, whether that's a rescue or a pup from a breeder.

I, also, would say rescue if you can - there are a lot of pups & older dogs desperate for a loving home.

If you want a pup, however, try to avoid sites like gumtree etc; you really don't always know what you're getting. I'd contact a couple of breed clubs & ask them if they can put you in touch with some breeders within a couple of hours drive from you. I know they were really helpful when I got Bandit & again when I got Dempsey.

When I collected Dempsey we had a 4 hour journey home. We started off with him in a pet carrier, but on the train I took him out & just held him in my arms. He had a look round & then fell asleep - much to everybody's delight!

It was a 2.5 - 3 hour journey to bring Vlad home. He travelled well!
