The 'c' word Empty The 'c' word

Post by bobs Mon Nov 28 2011, 09:33

Morning all. Bob's missus here. Last year, we got Sophie. She was six weeks when we got her on the 12th December. We had ummed and ahhed about getting another dog but felt the time was right and I bought her for Bob. We had Christmas all mapped out and had even paid for a swanky hotel for Christmas Day and another meal out for Boxing Day with friends.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, we cancelled Christmas. We gave our Christmas day meal away to friends and then on Boxing Day, I went out with friends whilst Bob puppysat.

Right, getting to the point, what are you lot doing about Christmas decorations? Last year, we aborted any idea of a tree and just had stuff hanging from the ceiling. I don't suppose there are any staffy proof decorations around so are you lot being brave and having a tree or is your pooch so well trained he/she won't touch the chocolates/baubles? Well, we are fortunate because we have an area that Vlad can't get to as we have a puppy gate that keeps him up one end of the house. He's still too silly for us to put a tree or pretty ornaments around any area he can get to. We also use a play pen while he is in the house. He can come in, have a run around and have a fuss and a play with us, then he goes into his play pen and onto his bed with his toys. Hopefully this is teaching him that he has his own area, so next year we might be able to have our tree and all our decorations back in the family room Big Grin

Violet can't even contain herself when she sees a hairbrush in the room, so I don't think a Christmas tree is a great idea! Too bristly.

Last Christmas was our first with Rocky and we kept the tree up. He just had a bit of a sniff around the baubels (that sounds good Laughing ) that were on the tree and didn't realy bother to destroy anything. We will put it up again this year we don't bother with many other decorations anyway, our flat is too small, we just have lights here and there and the tree which is artificial.

We always have a big tree, and lots of decorations, and this year will be no different. Smile This is Duke's first Christmas with us, so I'm not sure what he'll do, but he's a very well-behaved boy, angel so I'm holding thumbs he'll leave it alone. Big Grin

Of course I could be completely wrong and he's just been waiting for us for bring out the shiny stuff!!! rolling on the floor

We'll have an artificial one (a nice one!) on a table, but we won't have any holly or mistletoe cause Dempsey would eat the berries. Decorations have to be kept above waist height!

My girls are pretty ok with the tree, its the decorations like tinsel and baubles that they can get a bit carried away with. I just make sure to use plastic baubles instead of glass ones and hang them as out-of-reach as I can (ie not on the bottom 0.5m of the tree! Also tinsel drives them a bit loopy and can end up getting stripped, I would also be carefuly with lights if you have a pup under 1 year as they can chew thing sthey are not supposed to. I think the temptation of having balls hanging everywhere and not being allowed them becomes a bit much at times. My girls know they are not supposed to take them but we lose a good 5/6 every year! I wouldn't go without decorations I would just make sure they are non-toxic and wont cause your dog any harm if they do get hold of them?!
