muncher not Eating much
Hi, Our little muncher doesnt seem to want to each much the past two days, The breeders (if you can call them that) had him on crap.
We first tried him with the pedigree pouches just to see how he went he liked them, then we gave him the little sample bags from our vet which he lapped up. Now we have tried to put him onto james wellbeloved dry puppy food but he doesnt seem to want to know, He will eat some from your hand or odd bits from the floor but will hardly touch anything from his bowl :S what should I do I am really quite worried about him

Re: muncher not Eating much
Hi, I am relatively new to all of this, but our puppy is currently on dry food (we will give him raw too) and our breeders (who were wonderful and still give us support when we need it) gave us a puppy pack with a sample (not really a sample because it lasted a week!) of a dry food called Eukanuba. It is all natural and he LOVES it. I will admit it is more expensive than supermarket brands, but you can get massive bags which will last at least a month. It's an Australian company (just add the .com.au to the product) but you can order it worldwide and I think they have places you can buy them in other countries too

Here is alink to the Eukanuba puppy food if you would like to take a look. Check around though, you may be able to get it at a better price. Hope this helps.

Re: muncher not Eating much
my 9 month old was like that when we got him at 8 weeks and still tries it on now. for some reason the food from my hand tastes better than whats in the bowl even though its the same. just keep to a routine with the food you are on and when he is hungry enough he will eat just keep an eye on his weight and if you are at all worried see the vet to put your mind at ease. if he has gone for a while without eating though try some scrambled egg or small pieces of cooked chicken but still offer the dog food as well. it will be trial and error for you to find the right balance but you will both settle soon. good luck and big squeezes for the little puppy dog

Vlad was the same. We tried him on a different brand and he had a mouthful and then just left it. Eukanuba he seems to love The little bugger has put on nearly 2 kg in a week and a half... I asked the Vet if this was too much, but he said no, Vlad is healthy and thriving, and he doesn't look fat, just growing fast!

Re: muncher not Eating much
My Bear is the same!
He is one of 10 so was fighting for food, when we got him home he ate like a horse for the 1st day and a half and now he is hardly eating. He was on wagg puppy and goats milk but I couldn't get wagg so put him on Iams puppy, he has it moist (was with water and goats milk but now just water til he has finished the worming treatment.
He has occasional puppy treats for being good and has some kong paste to interest him in his toys.
He has plenty of energy tho. It seems to be that now he doesn't need to fight for his food he is happy to graze at it. I make a small bowl up and just leave it for him, I change it every few hours (as he seems to prefer it after it has sat for at least an hour). This does mean I was wasting a fair bit of food but it seems to suit him right now.
He is back at the vets next week so I can check he is doing well.
I guess it is all a bit new and strange for him and he will settle in soon so I am not overly worried right now.
Maybe Muncher is feeling the same.
PS the 'breeder' told me to feed him 3 times a day til he was 8 weeks and then drop to 2 times a day but the vet told me that I can feed him smaller meals more often for as long as it takes for him to work out how much he wants and needs.

Re: muncher not Eating much
we were told 4 times a day for feeding but lemmy prefered just 3 in the end now he's on 2 breakfast and tea. 8-9am for brekky and 5-6pm for tea seems to suit him. they get enough treats and things inbetween anyway

Re: muncher not Eating much
When we picked up Duffy from the sanctuary they gave us food that she was currently eating and said if we wanted to change it to do it gradually so we could give both dogs the same food. It can upset their tummies if done quickly and give them the runs. So the method to use was:
DAY 1 & 2: 3/4 original food with 1/4 new food
DAY 3 & 4: 1/2 original food with 1/2 new food
DAY 5 & 6: 1/4 original food with 3/4 new food
DAY 7: 100% new food
Hope this helps

Re: muncher not Eating much
Heard tonight that muncher may have been dropped/fell from a varanda about 1metre high before we bought him. The vet checked him over and she said he is fine does anybody think that sort of fall would have had any really sinister affect on the little guy?
We are just so glad we got him away from where he was!

Re: muncher not Eating much
Oh dear that is terrible, poor Muncher
I don't know what sort of effect that could have on him to be honest but the main thing is that he is now in a home that loves him and he will feel safe, hopefully this will erase any bad memories he may have.
Is he eating better yet? Bear actually polished off his breakfast in one sitting today so I think he is feeling at home now.
